When will it end? Will SteamOS 3.6 ever become stable? The end of the line has come, and gone, a few times now.

You thought SteamOS 3.6.16 "End of the Line" was going to be it? Wrong. You also thought SteamOS 3.6.17 "End of the End of the Line" would be the one — also quite clearly wrong. Now we're onto SteamOS 3.6.18 Beta "The Color at the End of the End of the Line".

Could this actually be the one to push SteamOS 3.6 over the finishing line into a stable release? Only the code magicians at Valve will know the answer to that.

From the release notes:

Note: This update is for the Steam Deck Beta and Preview channels, and includes new features that are still being tested. You can opt into this in Settings > System > System Update Channel.

General

  • Fixed a possible crash when using Steam Deck as the Remote Play host
  • Fixed colorspace for Game Recording
  • Improved color range when using Remote Play to Steam Deck

Unless it's already possible and I missed it, here's a SteamOS feature I'd love: staying on the previous major stable release until the new stable release actually becomes stable. An additional 'luddite' branch on a 6 month delay would be perfect.

There has not been a single major stable update in quite a while that HASN'T caused at least some issues for me.

SteamOS 3.6 still has a few issues to iron out before it could go into stable IMO. The main ones I remember are:
- Steam always starts in Big Picture when going to Desktop
- More often than not, after a reboot, the Game Mode session will prompt me to log in, and logging in always fails. A restart will fix it.

Both known and semi-common issues to my understanding.
