Now in Early Access, Arcane Wilds gives a slightly different take on the base-building RTS genre and comes with Linux support.

Not only is the setting quite interesting with the blending of themes, but the way it handles resources is a fun one. Resources you gather actually remain at the gathering sites, needing direct transportation for you to be able to use them. This means you can actually steal resources from opponents, requiring each player to properly protect them. It also has a special online co-op survival mode too which sounds pretty fun.

Three very different factions too:

  • Army: Boasting a powerful arsenal, the Army faction excels in ranged combat with essence-powered cannons, compensating for their low mobility with exceptional firepower.
  • Colony: Comprising a motley crew of gunslingers, the Colony faction employs explosive barrels and rapid-firing gatling guns, creating a versatile force on the battlefield.
  • Tribe: Known for their agility and adaptability, the Tribe faction utilizes movable structures and chaos-inducing abilities from medicine men and shamans to wreak havoc among enemies.

Some fun modding capabilities too with "first-class scripting support with Lua" they say so players can make their own maps and game modes, with Steam Workshop support.

Lukas Frischknecht, founder of Avancadia, says: "We poured our energy and development expertise into creating Arcane Wilds. We’re confident that Arcane Wilds will give RTS fans an experience they’ve never had before and give the genre a much-needed freshen-up."

Arcane Wilds | Release Date: 18th November 2024

Resource gathering?

Does that sound more like the Settlers games, rather than something you would see in Civ?

It's an RTS, it's nothing like Civ which is a turn-based 4x. So yes, it's more like Settlers, and Age of Empires and all other RTS.

Oh, here's one I'm going to keep an eye on. Sounds like an interesting blend of themes that could end up really fun.
OK this is going to sound like a minimal point, but I like the art, or maybe more what you'd call the visual design. Normally I'm not huge on visuals, but I've been put off by a few RTS just because they're kind of low-contrast and muddy and your forces don't make an impression. This definitely has that Starcraft "Those, those there--those are my troops. And they look fairly cool. And those others are definitely the enemy" feel.
