Ruins To Fortress looks like it could be interesting, a post-apocalyptic free-to-play pixel art open survival game. The developers have announced it's going to enter Early Access on December 13th.

Like a sort of blending somewhere between Terraria and Starbound, set on a single island where you craft tools, grow food, build formidable defences, and raze enemy bases. Here though you can either cooperate, or go after rivals so it's more on the competitive side. So perhaps a bit more like a side-scrolling Rust as you'll be able to host your own servers too.

They also have a new trailer to show it off:

Since it will be free they will be offering a single DLC to support the game that will include what sounds like mostly cosmetic items.

It will have Native Linux support at release.

Looks like their last game was also free (and positively reviewed, although not very noticed):

Am I missing a hidden business model here? The new game looks rather polished for a hobby project...

I think it's a nice, decent way to generate revenue. It reminds me of the old shareware days. Hopefully it pays off for them (assuming the game is good).

But how are they making money?

Hello, I’m one of the developers at NimbleBeasts. Our first game on Steam started as a Game Jam project, where it won first place. For several years, the game was available for purchase on Steam and as a free download on GitHub. A few months ago, we decided to make it completely free on Steam to reach even more players.

We’re deeply connected to the FOSS community and driven by our love for both playing and creating games.

Our new game is a big step forward—more complex, with significantly more development effort behind it. Even so, it’s still a hobby project developed by just the two of us. Our business model is simple: we believe that DLCs and cosmetic skin bundles will generate enough support to allow us to dedicate more time and resources to improving and finalizing the game.
