A free game to play midweek? Why not eh? You really should check out ROSE, a violent rogue-lite arena shooter where you sacrifice your body parts to progress and gain new weapons and abilities. Developer Zakroutil launched it free on Steam, with an optional donation DLC on November 18th.

I'm really surprised this is free, it's actually really good! You go through waves of enemies across various different arenas full of traps, and when you defeat a wave you can choose to sacrifice a body part which gives you a debuff, that you can later use to give yourself a big boost when you've sacrificed enough. A pretty clever game mechanic that really makes runs feel quite exciting.

Features:

  • Sacrifice your flesh and blood to progress.
  • Reverse sacrifices to gain boosts instead.
  • Unlock and upgrade unique weapons.
  • Slaughter waves of demented enemies.
  • Defeat titanic bosses.
  • Progress through the randomized arenas to uncover the dark story.
  • Avoid traps and other procedurally placed obstacles.

Properly weird, unique and terribly good fun. Difficult as hell though, with the speed of it and all the different types of insane enemies that come after you. Some can even latch onto you to keep hurting you. It's a visually wild experience that's for sure.

It works great on Desktop Linux with the latest Proton 9.0-3.
