The free and open source kart racing game SuperTuxKart is gearing up for another release, with SuperTuxKart 1.5 getting a first Beta that needs some testing.

You gotta love the STK project, it's been going for something around 17 years now, and in the last few years has really made some big improvements. Nice to see it continue on too!

Some highlights of STK 1.5 Beta 1 include:

  • Networking improvements.
  • A benchmarking mode.
  • Blog announcement system in the Online screen.
  • Improved audio, especially for headphones.
  • Some graphics improvements like:
    • Improvements to Level of Detail (LoD) distances.
    • New higher LoD and shadows settings.
    • Improved Cascaded Shadow Mapping.
    • More graphical effects for legacy video drivers.
    • Improved performance for scene node iteration.
    • Fix incorrect Screen-Space Reflection shader.
  • Various improvements to the user interface like letting you select favourite karts and tracks.
  • A higher resolution texture for scalable fonts.
  • And more in the changelog.
