The Spell Brigade from Bolt Blaster Games looks like a fun mixture of online co-op action and survivor-like mayhem and it appears to have sold rather well. Somehow I entirely missed it as well, even though it has Native Linux support and looks genuinely fun.

Especially interesting that it has friendly fire, so no one in the arena is safe. Oh my. There's also special team-based objectives, so they're really turning the idea of what survivor-likes can be into something unique here. Have a little look at the trailer below:

As for how it's doing – they just announced it's sold over 125,000 in less than two months. Very impressive. That would put them somewhere near 1 million GBP£ (before deductions from Valve, taxes and so on). Goes to show clearly there's a lot of hunger for these quick survivor-like action games right now and so no surprise why so many developers are doing their own spin on the genre.

From the developer: "We had high hopes for our game, but this has exceeded all our expectations, and it's only the beginning." - Hans Jacobs, Game Director, Bolt Blaster Games

Key Features:

  • Survivors-like Gameplay with Multiplayer Madness: Enjoy the thrill of fighting thousands of weird monsters together. Complete missions and upgrade spells as a team. Survive together!
  • Team-Based Combat: Assemble your Brigade and traverse the mystical warpath together. Experience the benefits of fighting as a team, even if it means occasionally stepping on each other’s toes. Fear not, as even the most unfortunate deaths can be remedied through the power of sorcery & friendship.
  • Dynamic Spell System: Find, upgrade, and combine your spells with powerful elements. The game ensures that no two builds are ever the same, and with multiple wizards in your squad, the potential for pure, unhinged chaos is endless!

The Spell Brigade is also Steam Deck Verified. I have a key request in for this one today, so hopefully sometime soon I can have a proper look at it.

QuoteThe Spell Brigade is also Steam Deck Verified.

I purchased this game a few days after it entered Early Access. I checked the Steam Deck Compatibility rating and discovered it was verified. I found this somewhat surprising. It seems to me the majority of games that have recently entered Early Access have a Steam Deck Compatibility rating of Unknown. Which makes sense.

Then I watched a YouTube gamer playing Spell Brigade on a Steam "Live" broadcast. He was playing multiplayer with three of the developers. During the broadcast, one of the developers mentioned that he keeps a Steam Deck by his desk at all times. If he wants to test a build, he grabs the Steam Deck to see how well things are working. Steam Deck Compatibility rating of verified... explained.
