There it is, the deal has been announced. Sony and KADOKAWA have "signed a strategic capital and business alliance agreement" that will make Sony the largest shareholder. It's not done just yet though, as the deal is set to go through on January 7, 2025.

Sony will acquire 12,054,100 new KADOKAWA shares for "approximately 50 billion yen", this will bump up Sony to have about 10% total shares in KADOKAWA and make them the largest holder overall. This is a big deal for video games, Anime and Manga since Kadokawa control FromSoftware (ELDEN RING, ARMORED CORE), Spike Chunsoft (Danganronpa, DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO), ACQUIRE Corp. (OCTOPATH TRAVELER) and Gotcha Gotcha Games (RPG Maker) in addition to all their Anime and Manga publishing.

From the press release:

Comment from Takeshi Natsuno, Chief Executive Officer, KADOKAWA CORPORATION

"We are very pleased to conclude this capital and business alliance agreement with Sony. This alliance is expected to not only further strengthen our IP creation capabilities, but also increase our IP media mix options with Sony's support for global expansion, allowing us to deliver our IP to more users around the world. We are confident that this will greatly contribute to maximizing the value of our IP and increasing our corporate value in the mid- to long-term. We intend to do our utmost to ensure that our collaborative efforts with Sony produce great results in the global market."

Comment from Hiroki Totoki, President, COO and CFO, Sony Group Corporation

"Through this capital and business alliance, we will become the largest shareholder of KADOKAWA, which consistently creates a wide variety of IP, including publications and books, such as light novels and comics, as well as games and anime. By combining KADOKAWA's extensive IP and IP creation ecosystem with the strengths of Sony, which has promoted the global expansion of a wide range of entertainment, including anime and games, we plan to work closely together to realize KADOKAWA's 'Global Media Mix' strategy, aimed at maximizing the value of its IP, and Sony's long-term vision, 'Creative Entertainment Vision.'"

The name of the Sony president has to be the Japanese equivalent to Mäxchen Müller in German (i.e. a generic placeholder name).

You think so? When I think of good old 'John Smith' type names in Japanese, it's always gonna be something like Tanaka Tarou/Touka, or Suzuki Shinichirou/Sakura, or Yamada Yasuo/Youko, or something like that. I don't think Totoki is a very common name.

You think so?
Yes, because it sounds made up, like Mäxchen Müller.

Although Müller is a very common surname in Germany, the name Mäxchen Müller is probably very uncommon, because no sane person would name their child like that.

10% in shares can hold a lot of influence and can push for seats on the board of directors. Don't underestimate the number.

I feel like I should comment just because a lot of people don't really understand Sony, or really just view it as SIE/Sony of America, but Sony is not based in California, just SIE is, Sony is still based and HQ'd in Japan and the Japanese branch runs a lot differently than the US one, in fact 99% of the problems people have with Sony is because of the US branch. For the anime sector, Sony of Japan, under SMEJ, already owns Aniplex and Aniplex produces Frieren, Dandadan, the Monogatari series, all of the Fate series except Prisma Illya and Demon Slayer among other anime they produce. In regards to censorship, it's not decided by Sony, since Sony of Japan likes to be hands off, it's decided by the studios; it's why MAPPA, who wants to keep their shows age ratings low, censors Ranma 1/2 but ScienceSaru, who doesn't care, does not censor Dandadan even though both anime are produced by Sony. In terms of games, Sony of Japan owns two studios, Team Asobi and Sony XDEV Japan, everyone knows Team Asobi now however Sony XDEV Japan is a dev studio designed, since both are just a reorganized Japan Studio, to help Asian devs make games for PlayStation, for example they helped make Stellar Blade. With all that out of the way, Sony won't try to influence Kadokawa since 1, it's Sony of Japan and Sony Group and 2 they really don't want to micro-manage everything they own since they do more than just games and anime.

investors do have some sort of say, but I don't think they'll ruin fromsoft or their games.

So I guess they will be making all of the games PS exclusives now... Too bad this isn't taking place in the US, it would have likely gotten an anti-trust investigation.

Late stage capitalism strikes again. If we survive not too much longer enough as a species then we will inevitably end up with like 2 or 3 mega corporations who own everything.
