Bullet Heavens are all the rage right now from Vampire Survivors to Brotato and everything in between them, so Valve launched have a little mini festival to celebrate them all. Weirdly, Vampire Survivors is not included in the festival, but then it also doesn't exactly need any promotion at this point since it was a runaway success.

The genre has absolutely exploded, with developer after developer chasing the trend to bring out their own version of it and honestly — I couldn't be happier. Some of my favourite and most-played games belong in this genre and I'm always excited to see what unique spin each developer puts on it.

What's the difference between Bullet Heavens and Bullet Hells? Well, in a Bullet Heaven, you are the one mostly spamming-out the attacks against hordes of enemies, rather than dodging all their attacks like you would in a Bullet Hell. That's about the simplest way to describe it.

Some of the games think I think you need to check out or keep an eye on include:

Check out the festival on Steam. It runs until December 11th.

Since clearly Bullet Heaven has been basically set as the name for the genre, I've also now set up a Bullet Heaven tag for such games going forward here on GamingOnLinux.

I'm not sure about Airships: Lost Flotilla demo – the movement is so sluggish even on the first ship. The second one is obviously meant to be worse.

Unfortunately Star Survivor has been partly broken for a few months – ever since the big 1.0 release – meteors do not split anymore, the new weapons seem to be only partially implemented featuring placeholder names, and according to several threads on the forum there are other serious issues. Very sad, I used to enjoy that one a lot last year, although the game was (and apparently still is) plagued a bad memory leak.

Then I played a Norse themed one that currently has a second playtest going. That one seems promising, but I can't remember the name. Okay, I found it again after looking through the page for several minutes: Asgard's Fall
