Valve released Steam Deck - SteamOS 3.6.21 Beta "Update of the Year" to fix up various problems, and then re-released it shortly after to fix up more issues. Here's what you need to know.

Many people diving into the new release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle noticed a bit of a problem, where characters' eyes were glowing various colours like something out of a horror film. It looked quite funny but now thankfully it should be fixed. Along with various security issues in the SteamOS system itself also solved.

Here's all the changes:

General

  • Fixed a rendering issue with characters' eyes in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
  • Added support for the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller
  • Fixed Linux kernel CVE-2024-50089
  • Fixed mpg123 CVE-2024-10573
  • Fixed libarchive CVE-2024-20696
This update has been re-released with the following additional fixes:
  • Fixed high single core CPU usage for users with large libraries during Steam startup.
  • Fixed a regression w/ reading the Wireless HORIPAD For Steam's grip buttons.

For Desktop Linux users the bug report on the Mesa drivers GitLab shows the Indiana Jones fix will be backported to Mesa 24.3.2, which releases around December 18th. Valve just pulled in the changes directly for their version of Mesa used.

Ok so it seems it's a game bug but they have a workaround now in Mesa... Let's hope it will be fixed in the game because I won't get a Mesa update anytime soon.

Cool that the issues seem to be fixed. Until then one had to use AMDVLK. On a side note, performance of this game is extraordinarily good, rare to see such optimized and good looking games these days.

On a good machine with 32Go RAM it runs very well but on the Steam Deck it really struggles.
