Helldivers 2 just dropped a colossal update that sees the return of the Illuminate faction, a bunch of powerful aliens that like to destroy colonies and take over the minds of your fellow humans.

And with it, a whole lot of extra content is available to play through with a bunch of new toys for your Helldivers to go with it like a Fast Recon Vehicle "FRV" for you and your squad to plough-through the hordes of human citizens turned into zombies. You're going to need it too, with the new setting for all the battles. No more big open spaces, instead you'll be fighting through busy cities.

Check out the rather great action-packed trailer below:

Some nice overall additions to the game on top of all the new content. Like being able to actually reconnect to your last match if you had a game crash, finally. On top of loads of fixes for various other bugs, the developers have clearly been incredible busy on this update and it shows.

I also let off a little cackling laugh when I read the known issues list:

Top Priority:

  • Players are unable to emote when flying through the air

The developers clearly know what we want.

I've been playing a bunch of it this morning and wow — the update is awesome. Still works just fine on Desktop Linux tested with the recent Proton 9.0-4 release.

That's just the hordes they turned, there's plenty of actual Illuminates.

Imo studios should be more creative than following the rather repetitive Left4Dead formula. It's been done to death already.

Left 4 Dead hardly invented zombies. I see very little resemblance between Helldivers and Left 4 Dead if any at all.

Anyway this patch looks absolutely MASSIVE! The Illuminate, vehicles and we get to fight on Super Earth? Looks like I will gather my friends to defend freedom this evening :)

If you said it because of the first shot of the trailer, it isn't Super Earth, they finally added small urban areas and roads to planets, part of Super Earth colonies. I just played a mission and they add a nice touch of variety to the missions, I liked it.

Yeah it's not Super Earth, it's on colonies inside space the Illuminate are now capturing.

Thank liberty! I thought the bastards had invaded Super Earth. Still colonies is bad but, you know, it's not red alert end times bad
