The much loved puzzle adventure The Talos Principle is being remade in Unreal Engine 5, with Croteam / Devolver Digital announcing The Talos Principle: Reawakened. Seems like Croteam are finished with their own Serious Engine now.

Speaking about why they went back they said:

After the success of The Talos Principle 2, we have some very cool projects going on, so why go back? There are many reasons, but the biggest one is simply that we love this game and while the original version is admittedly still pretty awesome, we wanted to create a definitive version that will keep the game fresh for years to come and allow a whole new audience to explore the Simulation.

Once again, we poured all our love and creativity into this project. We didn't just want to make a remaster with gorgeous graphics, although that's definitely part of it. But there's a lot more to this. There are quality-of-life improvements that make a real difference (seriously, the recorder puzzles are so much better now!). There's the puzzle editor. There's a whole new story to play! There are even developer commentaries.

Let's talk philosophy for a moment. We don't just think of games as products. These are the works that we will leave behind for future generations. The Talos Principle: Reawakened will both refresh and preserve this wonderful game that means so much to us.

This will include the Road to Gehenna expansion, along with a whole new chapter titled "In the Beginning". On top of that it will also come with a whole new puzzle editor for the community.

I'm mixed about this one. I'm not really looking for Talos1 with fancy graphics as the original was fine. And since I played it to death, it has nothing left for me from a puzzle perspective. But having a little extra campaign does make it more interesting. At least Croteam are still devs that I don't mind supporting since I've enjoyed their stuff. So let's see what they want for this.

Yeah. Alen Ladavec was the one that pulled the Linux development there. When he left for Google Stadia, all Linux knowledge was gone.

Yeah. Alen Ladavec was the one that pulled the Linux development there. When he left for Google Stadia, all Linux knowledge was gone.
It's funny how common this is. A company has excellent Linux support, everything just works. Then the one Linux guy leaves, and suddenly Linux is completely impossible to support.

It's funny how common this is. A company has excellent Linux support, everything just works. Then the one Linux guy leaves, and suddenly Linux is completely impossible to support.

I've seen reporters have a discussion where they say "Oh that dude, he's got magic knowledge, he does things with Linux".

It's more like most people just don't understand that you... Just... have to try.

Exactly! Engineers learn new things all the time. E.g. Android and iOS only came into existence not that long time ago. Platforms come and go every day, and nobody was born with Linux knowledge either.

Maybe they could open-source the Serious Engine if I don't plan to develop it further?

Why?

Why everybody and their cat are redoing stuff on UE5 of all engines, ditching perfectly good in-house engines; when did UE become the Windows of game engines?

the remake looks great, but is it worth the higher system requirements?
i mean it says 75GB on steam. original shows 8GB.
cyberpunk+DLC has around 75GB if i remeber correctly

i would play it again, if they make a native linux version. i think there is only one UE5 native linux game so far.

Exactly how I feel. This whole remaster thing is getting to absurd satire levels. Sometimes I read these articles and I honestly don't know if they're a joke or not. Talos 1 absolutely 100% needs NO REMASTER. It's just beyond absurd, similar to Horizon Zero Dawn.

just a side note, while my friend and I loved Talos 1, we really couldn't get into Talos 2, the story wasn't as gripping, and interacting with all the other simulation bots was just .... eh, okay I guess. Didn't grip us like the first one did.

I tried Talos Principle 2 but lost interest after a few hours as I didn’t find the open world elements very compelling. I loved the first one. Should I pick it back up?
