With a 6 minute cinematic trailer, CD PROJEKT RED have lifted the lid on The Witcher IV which will feature Ciri as the protagonist.
Powered by a "customized" Unreal Engine 5, the press email noted the new cinematic trailer "is pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5 on an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU". Additionally they said it's "Powered by the same tech that The Witcher IV is built on, using assets and models from the game itself, it aims to provide players with a cinematic look at the kind of experience the game is aspiring to provide. The trailer was created through a close collaboration between CD PROJEKT RED and Platige Image, who are no strangers to The Witcher universe, having been responsible for intro cinematics in the previous installments of the series".
So keep in mind the actual game will probably still look quite a bit different. This is really just to start the hype machine and get players invested in the waiting game for it. At least we get our first look at the game world as Ciri takes on a Witcher contract in a remote village terrorized for generations by a monster demanding ritual sacrifice

“We're kicking off a brand-new Witcher saga, this time with Ciri as the heart of the story!” said Sebastian Kalemba, Game Director. “It feels so good to finally be able to say those words — for the longest time we knew that we wanted Ciri to be the protagonist of The Witcher IV; it just felt natural to us and we believe that Ciri deserves it. In this game we want to explore what it means to truly become a witcher by following Ciri on her Path. This trailer is a taste of both that, and just how dark and grounded the world of The Witcher can be.”
Should help the story as well. She's an established character with plenty of opportunities for growth and epic stories. And the fact that it makes it easy to run into Geralt over the course of the games will help too.
But it'll be many years before we see this, so my part will just be making sure I survive that long.
Quoting: EhvisCiri was not super interesting to play in the few section of TW3 because the mechanics just weren't there.
Interesting, for me it was the other way around; before dumping Witcher 3, I remember vastly preferring Ciri's gameplay over Geralt's, it just felt way better and less clunky for me. Like I said I dumped the game shortly after so maybe Geralt's gameplay gets better.
Quoting: EhvisNot surprising and a good choice. They have a lot of work to do though. Ciri was not super interesting to play in the few section of TW3 because the mechanics just weren't there. And since Ciri is not an actual witcher, they have a lot gameplay design work to do. So we can probably expect something quite different.Apparently somewhere between the end of TW3 and the beginning of this game, she got made a Witcher (sidenote: did you notice the Lynx medallion on her? So we'll probably get to see this school in the game, or members of it).She also has cat eyes, can use potions, and signs. All signs point to her having undergone the mutations

Ciri is basically just a sword and a dash. No skill tree, no weapon variation. That also meant they had to make her somewhat OP, especially in the healing department. For Geralt there are so many things to tweak to your liking (especially in the next gen update).

Haven't actually seen the trailer yet. Will have to wait till I'm back from work. But that does add some interesting world building to explore. But now that you mention it, the lynx school medallion was one of the few things that was shown before.
The trailer graphics is very realistic, but I wonder if this is really a realtime rendering and what kind of hardware it can run on now to achieve that?
UPDATE:
I missed that it mentioned pre-rendered. So not real time. That makes more sense.

Quoting: M@GOidSpeaking of trailers from CD Projekt Red games, do you guys know if the killer fembot from the Cyberpunk trailer appears in the game?
Yes, she appears in actual Cyberpunk 2077 - search for Melissa Rory.

Quoting: ShmerlAccording to CDPR sources, Ciri went through trial of the grasses. I guess there will be a theme of restoring witcher schools in the game?
Interesting, especially concerning her time/space controlling abilities, prolly be fun to play. I've only read the books and played 1 and 2. I kinda assumed she was still at, what was it, King Arthur's universe?
It would be cool to see more witcher schools! Especially the Cats!
By the time Ciri is in her adulthood years, I doubt there is more then a handful of actual witchers left in the world.
Quoting: TheRiddickWas kind of hoping for a :pick female/make :pick school :pick appearance. Witcher game. Ell well, not that I don't like Ciri, its just I was hoping for like a fresh game, maybe even good old witcher day prequel would be nice.

At the end of Witcher 3, a second Conjunction of the Spheres happens. I think that will lead into a resurgence for the witchers, and the witcher creation process is altered, modernized. Ciri is a new kind of witcher.

Quoting: ShmerlCiri went through trial of the grassesI wonder how that is going to be explained character-development-wise. In the books Geralt was always pretty convinced that Ciri would not have to undergo mutations in order to become a Witcher due to her heritage (though I haven't finished the last book yet - might be that there were developments I am not aware of).
Also, I am pretty sure we see her using Witcher Signs and drawing power from the water in the trailer. Even if we do not count Witcher Signs as magic-use, drawing power from the water is quite obviously in conflict with her having forsworn magic.
I must say, the people who made the trailer are geniuses - stirring speculation and piquing interest this way.
Expectations will be pretty high because I know they can be achieved. I have read four of the Witcher books, and the games are more consistently good than the books themselves to be honest. Out of the four I read, one was great, one was really good, and the other two were not bad but passable. I am not strongly inclined to continue the written series.
Quoting: dvdIs this the one that is not made by CDPR?
No, that's the Witcher 1 remake.
Quoting: 14Thinking about the trailer, I have to say I'm not happy they gave everyone the unexpected simulation of being a peeping Tom to watch a naked lady having a bath, trying to create what privacy she can, without knowing you're watching and zooming in on specific areas of the body. And who is this woman? Someone about to be sacrificed. So, it's fine; she's about to die. She won't care. Her loved ones won't care either. Right? Why is that scene the first thing they show about the new game? Female objectification leads to a society where both men and women reject each other.
Who hurt you?
