After doing the same with their FPS, Enlisted, Gaijin have announced today that War Thunder will also be changing the anti-cheat system used. This may, potentially, cause some momentary breakage.
In the announcement they mentioned War Thunder will be moving over to BattlEye, which is already supported on Linux (for both Native Linux builds and Proton). They currently use Easy Anti-Cheat for it and no reason has actually been given as to why they decided to swap over.
The move makes sense though, keeping their games using the same anti-cheat system. They've supported Linux for a long time now too, being one of the earlier few bigger developers to get involved, so I don't personally expect any real problems here. Especially since Enlisted also works on Linux right now with both games having a Native Linux build available.
They said the changeover is going to happen in waves, so you might not see BattlEye on your own system for a few weeks. Eventually everyone will be on it, but they'll of course continue supporting those still on Easy Anti-Cheat until the switchover is complete.
You can keep an eye on our anti-cheat compatibility page for updates on all games for Linux / Steam Deck. Any feedback on that page goes to the forum.
Anyway, I do play this game and the grinding is a bit harsh, but it's a nice experience with friends.
the grinding is a bit harsh
I mean, at least it's not pay2win. So i always try to remind myself, that i don't play the game for the sake of unlocking the tech tree, but because the matches are fun. That way, the grind that sets in beyond T3 isn't really too much of an issue imho...
