The next major version bump is coming for the Windows compatibility layer Wine, which forms a big part of Valve's Proton, with Wine 10.0 having a first Release Candidate.
With this now available, the project has gone into a code freeze meaning no new features will be added from here, with a focus on bug fixing for the full release of Wine 10.0 next year.
The highlights from this release include:
- Bundled vkd3d upgraded to version 1.14.
- Mono engine updated to version 9.4.0.
- Initial version of a Bluetooth driver.
- UTF-8 support in the C runtime functions.
- Support for split debug info using build ids.
- Various bug fixes.
For some context on the above, vkd3d 1.14 had these main changes:
- Disassembler support for binary effects.
- Initial support for Metal Shading Language output.
- Miscellaneous bug fixes.
And for Mono 9.4.0:
- It's now possible to configure XDEBUG to see JITted methods in GDB. See https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/wikis/Wine-Mono#gdb
- Added Georgian translation to Mono.
- Out-only arrays in native-to-managed wrappers are no longer marshaled on the input side.
- Implemented GUID generation for class types. (Used by Stronghold Kingdoms, which unfortunately isn't fully fixed yet)
- System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels.AggregateDictionary now allows for modification of keys. (Used by Stronghold Kingdoms)
- HttpClientTransportSink now returns ChunkedMemoryStream in async responses. (Used by Stronghold Kingdoms)
- Upstream updates:
- SDL to 2.30.8
- FNA to 24.10

Remembering Wine from back in the pre-1.0 days... almost seems like a different universe. At the very least, Wine started in a different millennia, which is nearly as bizarre to think about.

It becomes harder and harder to find games that have funny rendering issues or do not work at all. Haven't filed a bug report in ages

I can name one, Wine and mouse polling rates. For myself specifically 9.20 worked perfectly, however 9.22/10rc1 in certain games like Guild Wars 2 fps tank unless running mouse at 125hz.

Annual version increment feels like it provides a continuity to the development process. So much has changed and WINE has come such a long way in such a short time.
Their strategies and partnerships work. What a wonderful thing.
I have looked forward to version WINE 10 and once we clear the RC's we'll be there. Many thanks to the communities, the big, and the small.
Now if only they could get their HQ website refreshed ;P There are a few Linux sites I wouldn't mind stepping their game up.
