Collabora take over libsurvive development an open source VR lighthouse tracking system

Collabora have announced they've taken over development of libsurvive, an open source lighthouse tracking system for VR. It's now moved over to their GitHub to continue to expand.

The developers at Collabora continue working on Monado, the cross-platform open source OpenXR runtime that works across Android, Linux and Windows. So this seems like a perfect fit to add.

From the announcement written by developer Frederic Plourde:

Collabora's involvement in Open Source XR development continues to grow today as we welcome the libsurvive project into the fold! The open source lighthouse tracking system is entering an exciting new chapter as it transitions its ownership over to our GitHub organization where we will have two members from our XR team as official maintainers.

Due to other commitments, the previous maintainers have decided to step back and pass the torch to ensure the project continues to thrive. We are grateful for their contributions and look forward to supporting the project as much as we can.

Libsurvive is a set of open source tools and libraries that enable 6 dof tracking on lighthouse and vive-based systems, and can run on any device. It currently supports both SteamVR 1.0 and SteamVR 2.0 generation of devices, and is also easily usable with Monado, the cross-platform, open source XR runtime.

This is an exciting moment to further push 6 dof tracking for all devices in a true, open source fashion. Catch us on the libsurvive Discord to stay in the loop for the latest news!

I was sceptical about VR on Linux, but it is viable.
I have Face Toaster myself. It works OK in some VR games I played.
Then there is VR video content too.

Bout face toaster for 100$(incl delivery) - best shopping i have done in years.

Not so many lighthouses left to track, these days. They keep phasing them out, replacing with automated systems. It's kind of melancholy.

. . . OK, OK. What's a lighthouse tracking system?

I have the Valve Index, and most games I've tried worked. I have some minor issues with a few, but all my software outside of Steam is horribly outdated and unsupported even - so at this time, I don't blame anyone else 😁.

For my household the novelty was amazing, but a year later - we basically only boot it up for Beat Saber (depending on mood - once a day or once a month). I wish someone made a good AI-level-generator for it though. We tried 1 or 2 roughly a year ago and they were bad.

Also we're using an old Beat Saber release, since at the time the guides suggested it.

Running all of this open-source would be very cool. But I don't have the spare mental resources right now to tinker away with it. So much higher priority tinkering to do 😄.
