id Software and Bethesda Softworks have revealed more gameplay for DOOM: The Dark Ages, plus it's now set for release on May 15th. Although, like many bigger developers, you can get it a few days early if you buy the more expensive edition of the game for Advanced Access on May 13th.

Check out the new trailer:

Something to note, is that the game requires a GPU with Ray Tracing capabilities, even on their minimum settings. As they announced in a news post they said: "Note: DOOM: The Dark Ages requires a hardware ray tracing-compatible GPU to play on PC, including Minimum Specifications. Details on Path Tracing specifications will be revealed at a later date."

They say it's using a new generation of their idTech game engine, idTech8, which takes "full advantage of modern hardware on all platforms, idTech8 ushers in a new era of gameplay performance and visual fidelity featuring all-new dynamic interactive ray-traced lighting and shadows, higher-fidelity image quality, increased gore and destruction and so much more".

Sounds quite exciting, if your PC will run it, as it has the "largest environments ever in a DOOM game" to date with dragons and great big mechs. This might be a bridge too far for the Steam Deck though. Hopefully there won't be any issues with normal Desktop Linux via Proton.

Here's the specifications they've given:

MINIMUM (1080p/60 FPS/Low Video Settings)

OS: Win10 64Bit / Win 11 64Bit

CPU: AMD Zen 2 or Intel 10th Generation @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or better, Intel Core i7 10700K or better)

GPU: NVIDIA or AMD hardware ray tracing-capable GPU with 8GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super or better, AMD RX 6600 or better)

System RAM: 16GB

Storage Capacity: 512GB or higher NVME SSD (100GB Available)

RECOMMENDED (1440p/60 FPS/High Video Settings)

OS: Win10 64Bit / Win 11 64Bit

CPU: AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th Generation @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or better, Intel Core i7 12700K or better)

GPU: NVIDIA or AMD hardware ray tracing-capable GPU with 10GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: NVIDIA RTX 3080 or better, AMD RX 6800 or better)

System RAM: 32GB

Storage Capacity: 512GB or higher NVME SSD (100GB Available)

ULTRA 4K (2160p/60 FPS/Ultra Video Settings)

OS: Win10 64Bit / Win 11 64Bit

CPU: AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th Generation @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or better, Intel Core i7 12700K or better)

GPU: NVIDIA or AMD hardware ray tracing-capable GPU with 16GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: NVIDIA RTX 4080 or better, AMD RX 7900XT or better)

System RAM: 32GB

Storage Capacity: 512GB or higher NVME SSD (100GB Available)

Additionally to note, it will include Denuvo Anti-Tamper.

The base game is 80 bucks though. It's insane. Publishers have truly lost their mind.

Luckily there are alternative sites that offer cheaper key's or you can wait for this or next years winter sale on Steam and get it at a more reasonable price.

The game does look amazing though, I'll give them that, but the price is too much for a pure single player experience.

It seems that ray-tracing will be a requirement, so be prepared for a "non compatible with Steam Deck".

This is insane, about 2 years ago I bought an rx6600xt.
They will have to wait 5-10 years more that I upgrade the computer (it's too expensive nowadays).
Also I'll will give money to ID happly but not bethesda or microsoft.
When its under 10€ I'll decide.
Also I think they are exagerating about the requeriments. It will run with less.

Finally a big game not using Unreal Engine 5. But I hope they can deliver smooth rendering, because UE5 games are riddled with stuttering even on high-end hardware.

In the specs I am not seeing the size of the game, just that you need 1/2 to 1tb hard drive space. This is going to be a bloated hard drive eater.

What about the other rumors of it having Denuvo at launch?

Dont forget the season pass and DLC garbage that comes with the live service nonsense.

This isnt DOOM. If you want a good doom experience, install old school DOOM, load up brutal DOOM -- and enjoy the seemingly endless quality maps and mods out there. Just because they label it DOOM doesnt mean it is DOOM.

80 Dollars for this? If people really enjoy this type of content for that kind of money, more power to them. But wow, talk about lining up to be ripped off over and over.

Not a rumour, it does have it.

Game looks awesome. But I have not forgotten how Marty Stratton treated Mick Gordon and why his music will not be in this game.

My recommendation: because of the many many many negatives surrounding this game, just forget about it and go check out one of the award winning mods for the original doom/doom2. Some of the current stuff releasing is absolutely phenomenal. My friend and I are playing through the brand new Legacy of Rust right now and having a blast! The level designs are wonderful. Also the Romero designed Sigil mods are incredible. These are just two examples ... there are so many more.

Indiana Jones requires ray-tracing and runs on the SD just fine.

This game is going to my wishlist, but like all the others, I'll wait for an awesome sale price... Might be never.

Else, I might play it on GFNow. Seems the Steam Deck will have a native app. Looking forward to test it.

Sure thing, I'm not going to buy a GPU for this single game.
If the minimum required GPU is an rx6600, I wonder why exactly the ray tracing is 'needed' -- or what kind of playability they have in mind, at minimum specs. That’s the card I own, and while it can 'nominally' (?!) do ray tracing, to the extent that I've tried it on Minecraft, it's not really worth it. And it can’t do any of the raytraced gzdoom mods, needless to say.

Bad news, then -- id Software is owned by Bethesda, who is, in turn, owned by Microsoft. If you give money to id Software you're giving it to Bethesda and Microsoft too.

-----

I can see that Bethesda is up to its usual "new h/w required" b******t. I'll pass.
