Sad news for NVIDIA GPU owners on Linux who want to play FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, which just released on Steam yesterday as it appears broken. Works on Linux for those with an AMD GPU like the Steam Deck though.
According to the developer of VKD3D-Proton, the Direct3D 12 to Vulkan translation layer used by Proton, this is an NVIDIA driver bug that has been reported to NVIDIA already. As developer Hans-Kristian Arntzen said on GitHub:
The RTX issues are known. It's a driver bug and it has been reported to NV with bug number 5059946.
I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out a reasonable workaround, but to no avail.

NVIDIA do have a new 570 Linux driver coming soon to support the new GeForce RTX 50 series, which should be coming on January 30th. However, some have spotted an early build of the 570 driver and tested it and reported that it does not fix it (but it's not clear if that's a complete driver).
The good news for everyone else, is that it does work with an AMD GPU (including the Steam Deck with SteamOS). However, if you're on a SteamOS-like distribution, you might need to tell the game you're not on a Steam Deck, otherwise it will give you low visuals. Set this launch option:
SteamDeck=0 %command%
Putting the below as launch option works a bit better and a screen launches doing some pre-shader loading, but when it finishes another error appears saying the assertion failed, and the games closes.
VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 VKD3D_SHADER_MODEL=6_6 %command%

Still, kind of expected with very new titles and/or very new GPUs, isn't it?

Wait, so it's lowering the graphics settings when run on a Steam Deck?
I can appreciate that a Steam Deck is not going to be as powerful as my laptop... But this implies that the game is going to look like rubbish on my Steam Deck and if that's the case, I will probably give this game a miss for the foreseeable future.
- reboot the game
- copy the save data from the Remake prefix to the Rebirth prefix
- change to windowed, set resolution to 4K and change back to Full screen in order
- pin dynamic resolution to 50-50%
