Sad news for NVIDIA GPU owners on Linux who want to play FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, which just released on Steam yesterday as it appears broken. Works on Linux for those with an AMD GPU like the Steam Deck though.

According to the developer of VKD3D-Proton, the Direct3D 12 to Vulkan translation layer used by Proton, this is an NVIDIA driver bug that has been reported to NVIDIA already. As developer Hans-Kristian Arntzen said on GitHub:

The RTX issues are known. It's a driver bug and it has been reported to NV with bug number 5059946.

I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out a reasonable workaround, but to no avail.

NVIDIA do have a new 570 Linux driver coming soon to support the new GeForce RTX 50 series, which should be coming on January 30th. However, some have spotted an early build of the 570 driver and tested it and reported that it does not fix it (but it's not clear if that's a complete driver).

The good news for everyone else, is that it does work with an AMD GPU (including the Steam Deck with SteamOS). However, if you're on a SteamOS-like distribution, you might need to tell the game you're not on a Steam Deck, otherwise it will give you low visuals. Set this launch option:

SteamDeck=0 %command%

The Final Fantasy VII non-remake also refused to start on my laptop because I didn't have an internet connection (I did).

I have an AMD GPU (AMD Radeon RX 5700) on Bazzite and the game doesn't run. I get the error that I should execute the game without the -dx12 or -d3d12 option.

Putting the below as launch option works a bit better and a screen launches doing some pre-shader loading, but when it finishes another error appears saying the assertion failed, and the games closes.
 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 VKD3D_SHADER_MODEL=6_6 %command%

I imagine the Radeon RX 5700 is simply to old for the feature-set needed by the game.

Game runs like HOT garbage on RX 6600 XT stutters, and kernel panics, Kwin & mutter crashes on both KDE and GNOME respectively.. but guess can't expect better from Square as heard even on windows plenty are having issues. Guess will come back to this in 6 months see if its fixed..

Damn, I would prefer avoiding having to purchase a new GPU right now and wait for the new architecture next year. But I also want to play FFVII Rebirth :(

EDIT: I'm horrible consumerist :(

That is curious, it doesn't happen that often anymore.

Still, kind of expected with very new titles and/or very new GPUs, isn't it?

Wait, so it's lowering the graphics settings when run on a Steam Deck?

I can appreciate that a Steam Deck is not going to be as powerful as my laptop... But this implies that the game is going to look like rubbish on my Steam Deck and if that's the case, I will probably give this game a miss for the foreseeable future.

@tohur according to the github issue:
  • reboot the game

  • copy the save data from the Remake prefix to the Rebirth prefix

  • change to windowed, set resolution to 4K and change back to Full screen in order

  • pin dynamic resolution to 50-50%

Does this not support DX11/DXVK like Part 1 did? With Part 1, I could launch it with -dx11 to get DXVK and have better performance compared to VKD3D on my Arc A770.
