End of an era for another game studio, as Freejam - developers of Robocraft and the in-development Robocraft 2 - are closing and so both games will also be shut down.

Robocraft is a online PvP battle arena where you customize vehicles and build them block-by-block. It was quite popular when it originally released but over the years the players numbers saw a steady decline. Since mid-2020 it saw less than 1,000 concurrent players max each day and only continued to lose players.

The announcement was shared in their Discord, here's what they said:

It’s with a heavy heart that we have to tell you all that we’re ceasing production on Robocraft 2 and closing Freejam as a studio. With the current market conditions and the server costs required to keep a game like RC2 running, we’re simply unable to launch or sustain development. We will spend some time sunsetting both Robocraft 1 and 2, as well as Cardlife over the coming weeks.

Freejam has been a family to all of us, and you have been part of that. Your feedback and thoughts have always driven us forward, but beyond this, the community’s passion is a massive part of what has made working at Freejam such a pleasure.

We especially want to recognise all of the Admins and Moderators who have helped us over the years, ensuring that the community and the game is a welcome place for everyone. Your time, energy, support and so, so much patience has made a world of difference.

From all of us at Freejam, thank you so much for joining us on this journey.

It's such a shame that studios like Freejam have to close down, and it's even more of a shame that they can't release any of their source code to whoever is interested in keeping the game going in their spare time.

I got a lot of fun out of Robocraft, it's a shame (but also I haven't played it for many years).

> a shame that they can't release any of their source code

They can't, or won't?

They can't, or won't?

There are many, many reasons game developers cannot release their source code. To name a few:
  • The publisher may forbid it

  • Usage of APIs covered by NDAs, such as console platform APIs

  • Usage of proprietary middleware

  • Hard drive failure on the computer which has the source code
