Linux kernel 6.13 is out now

One missed earlier this week while I was running around Wales, Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux kernel 6.13.

In the release announcement Torvalds said:

So nothing horrible or unexpected happened last week, so I've tagged and pushed out the final 6.13 release.

It's mostly some final driver fixes (gpu and networking dominating - normal), with some doc updates too. And various little stuff all over. The shortlog is appended for people who want to see the details (and, as always, it's just the shortlog for the last week, the full 6.13 log is obviously much too big).

With this, the merge window for 6.14 will obviously open tomorrow. I already have two dozen pull requests pending - thank you, you know who you are.

Some highlights of what's new:

  • A proper fix for data corruption on 64GB Steam Deck models. Plus a few other miscellaneous kernel improvements for Steam Deck APU support.
  • A fix for AMDGPU when running Steam games and YouTube videos together, to prevent a system hang with multiple monitors.
  • Case-insensitive support for tmpfs. An interesting one that can help Wine, Proton and Flatpak as noted:

The use case for this feature is similar to the use case for ext4, to better support compatibility layers (like Wine), particularly in combination with sandboxing/container tools (like Flatpak).

Those containerization tools can share a subset of the host filesystem with an application. In the container, the root directory and any parent directories required for a shared directory are on tmpfs, with the shared directories bind-mounted into the container's view of the filesystem.

If the host filesystem is using case-insensitive directories, then the application can do lookups inside those directories in a case-insensitive way, without this needing to be implemented in user-space. However, if the host is only sharing a subset of a case-insensitive directory with the application, then the parent directories of the mount point will be part of the container's root tmpfs. When the application tries to do case-insensitive lookups of those parent directories on a case-sensitive tmpfs, the lookup will fail"

Highlights continued:

  • A new AMD 3D V-Cache optimizer driver to help X3D processors improve performance.
  • Improvements to Apple M1 device support.
  • The open source NVIDIA driver Nouveau got DRM panic support for nv50+ cards.
  • Improved support for various older Apple devices including phones, Apple TV, iPad and more.
  • Platform profile support for Dell laptops with new WMAX thermal interface, present on some Alienware X-Series, Alienware M-Series and Dell's G-Series laptops.
  • V3D driver for Raspberry Pi gets "Super Pages" support to help performance.
  • Added support for the Corsair Void headset family.
  • Lots more new hardware support as usual.

As usual I'm just searching through and cherry-picking random bits here. It's a ridiculously long read as always with thousands of changes across all areas. See more in the full changelog.

Is there a particular addition you're excited to see that made it into Linux kernel 6.13? Let me know in the comments.

Is there a report about that that I can read?

It was from the changelog but this is the specific bit: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/T/

I ran into that particular hang so many times it frustrated me some.
Let's hope this will stop it once and for all.

Yeah, I read that one, but didn't describe which browser they were using, if there's a list of games or it is anything that runs on proton, etc.

Thank you Liam for that list :)
