Moonring originally released back in 2023 from the co-creator of the Xbox's Fable series, it's free, has a lot of good reviews and now it should be even better for all players. The developer has steadily continued to upgrade the game since release, with this being "build 900".
More about it: "Moonring is a retro-inspired open-world, turn-based, tile RPG in the style of the classic Ultima games, but created from the ground up with modern design sensibilities. The world's geography is hand-designed, but the deadly dungeons beneath the surface reconfigure each time you leave... or die. Travel, trade, sneak, fight and sail the world of Caldera. Speak with the townsfolk, learn Caldera's secrets, and challenge the Archon for his throne... or even overthrow the Gods themselves!"
If you love your classics but appreciate the modern touches, this is definitely one for you. It works well on Linux with Proton and is Steam Deck Verified.

In the latest update the developer noted:
Welcome to build 900. Yes, really. So much has changed since last year.
I've held off doing this for the longest time because there are a LOT of you out there, and I didn't want to deal with a huge influx of issues at one time. This way, I've tested the game out on a smaller (more insane) audience and annoyed them instead of all of you.
Those on the experimental branch will be well aware of this, but the rest of you are in for a big surprise. Well, several actually.
- the UI has had a complete overhaul
- the dungeon generator was thrown away and started again from scratch
- there are lots of new dungeon features, too
- minor ruins are now far more interesting
- the Traders have been replaced with far more varied Events (which also include traders)
- the map is way more helpful
- the balance of the game is a little more challenging, with way fewer exploits
- armour makes more sense
- the Steamdeck version is actually really nice
...and so much more.
I personally think the game has never been better, more stable, or more of a retro ego-stroking exerc... I mean goose-filled nightmare.
Testing it on Steam Deck today and it's looking really good there. The Steam page doesn't say so but it does have full controller support with the correct icons and all.

Amazing that this is free.
You beat me to it. I was just going to point out that there was a Linux version in AppImage format on the itch.io page.
There's a Mac version too.
