A fresh update to Proton Experimental arrived for SteamOS Steam Deck / Linux gamers with some necessary fixes for various games. Valve did release another one-liner update previously that was noted in my previous article on SteamOS expanding beyond the Steam Deck.
For the release on January 15th here's all the changes:
- Fixed Stalker 2, The Axis Unseen, Beyond Handwell, Marvel Rivals, The Finals, Creatures of Ava crashing with Intel GPUs.
- Fixed Marvel Rivals crashing on non-Steam Deck devices after a recent game update.
- Fixed Sea of Thieves Xbox login window not working.
- Fixed interface elements in Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two showing as solid green color.
- Fixed Proton 9 regressions:
- Overcooked! All You Can Eat works with more than one controller again.

It will show up in your Steam Downloads as an update if you already have it. Otherwise you can search for Proton Experimental in your Steam Library. See more in the changelog.

Nice to see the Marvel Rivals fix, since it's incredibly popular right now. Recently it managed to hit a concurrent user count of 644,269 which is really impressive. The good news for us is that the developer plans to keep it supported, after reversing some recent bans.
Some of the games, like Stalker 2, also need `VK_EXT_shader_image_atomic_int64` support in ANV to be able to run. But there is a open mesa MR for it so should hopefully not be too far off.
I won't remove the Steam Deck "workaround" for Rivals, it loads the game faster. I still brag about it to my friends who are on Windows every time we launch the game.
I think I will also keep it.
Furthermore, I fixed the issue with my shaders recompiling every time at launch by storing them in a dedicated directory and disabling cleanup if it can help someone
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH=~/.steam/cache/2767030 __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1
I suppose it is a bigger problem with the size of the global shader's cache but it works.
