With CES starting tomorrow, there's already lots of leaks and speculation going around and Valve have been quick to shoot down an AMD Z2 Steam Deck.
AMD are expected to reveal the AMD Z2 processors today and the website Videocardz ran an article that seemed to include early leaked details. They also said this would include an updated Steam Deck.
However, quickly shooting it down after it spread like wildfire across social media, Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais posted on Bluesky to say: "There is and will be no Z2 Steam Deck. Guessing the slide was meant to say the series is meant for products like that, not announcing anything specific.".
Nice to see Valve quickly clear this up. It also goes to show that waiting for official announcements is always best.
Valve have said repeatedly they want to do a Steam Deck 2, but they're waiting on a true "generational leap" before doing a Steam Deck 2. Considering the Steam Deck OLED only launched in November 2023, and Valve only just launched it in Australia along with a Limited Edition White model, this is still clearly far too early for a Steam Deck 2.
It's definitely still a bit too early. Maybe 1 or 2 more years is when I personally expect it. 5 year cadence makes sense for upgrades, IMO.
Valve was on to something when they specified the Steam Deck APU to have only 4 cores.
Besides, Steam Deck targeted optimizations usually benefit everyone with older or less powerful PCs,This is what matters to me!
Well we definitely know it also wont be the Z3 chip.. Amirite?Maybe we'll get Z2: Ep1?
