I can't quite believe it either. Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Command & Conquer Renegade and Command & Conquer Generals (inc. Zero Hour) have their code officially open sourced.
This is how it should be done. When a game is old enough, open source it so the community can keep it alive and learn from and perhaps even improve them. Looking over them they're all under the GLP3 license. However, there are some additional terms added like EA not granting any "trademark or publicity rights", you don't get the right to use "Command & Conquer" or any other trademark for example.
EA did more than just open sourcing their older titles though. They've also enabled Steam Workshop support for:
- C&C Renegade
- C&C Generals & Zero Hour
- C&C 3 Tiberium Wars and Kane’s Wrath
- C&C Red Alert 3 & Uprising
- C&C 4 Tiberian Twilight
They also launched a new video going over some rare gameplay footage from the early development of C&C Renegade and C&C Generals:

All of them are now on GitHub:

To do this EA worked with Luke "CCHyper" Feenan, who they said was "part of our Community Council for the C&C Remastered Collection, and was involved in bringing the C&C Ultimate Collection to Steam back in March 2024". You can see the full message from EA and Feenan in a post on Steam.

Someone can maybe uncap/uncouple the 30 fps cap and the game speed being tied to FPS.
Theres hope!
Thanks EA i guess!
"Lets discuss how Windows is a flaming pile of poo"
Oh how that gave me a chuckle 😂

It's honestly quite refreshing how pro-consumer ea seems to be when it comes to c&c, someone high up at ea must REALLY like c&c lmao
It was P2P and the simulation was throttled to 5Hz which I bet a lot of people might be surprised at, given it's on the faster paced side of the fence as far as RTS games go.

Now those games can be ported to Linux, macOS, and current and future versions of Windows, and be kept alive as long as there's a passionate coder who cares about bringing them back. C&C is really popular, too, so it will have a much longer lifespan than many other open source games.
They should do this more often, it's an infinite money source, they do a positive advertisement to a pretty old game, people buys them and the community do the job to "update" the game to current standards
Yes, please! Now I wish EA would release the source code for the classic Wing Commander games, especially because the GOG/DVD version of Wing Commander 4 does not work very well under WINE or Proton, and so that modders can mod or upgrade those games to their liking.
Hope someone will volunteer to port them on Linux !!!

I welcome this news and would happily reward EA by purchasing a remaster of the remaining C&C titles. I look forward to see what the community comes up with. The future of the C&C franchise now appears to looks very bright.
I am still sceptical of EA. Surly they didn't just do this just to be kind? There must be money involved somewhere.
Has EA turned a new leaf? If so then I too would also like to see the Road Rash franchise revived.
Does make one hope we might see a proper new C&C game one day.
See more from me
