I can't quite believe it either. Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Command & Conquer Renegade and Command & Conquer Generals (inc. Zero Hour) have their code officially open sourced.
This is how it should be done. When a game is old enough, open source it so the community can keep it alive and learn from and perhaps even improve them. Looking over them they're all under the GPL3 license. However, there are some additional terms added like EA not granting any "trademark or publicity rights", you don't get the right to use "Command & Conquer" or any other trademark for example.
EA did more than just open sourcing their older titles though. They've also enabled Steam Workshop support for:
- C&C Renegade
- C&C Generals & Zero Hour
- C&C 3 Tiberium Wars and Kane’s Wrath
- C&C Red Alert 3 & Uprising
- C&C 4 Tiberian Twilight
They also launched a new video going over some rare gameplay footage from the early development of C&C Renegade and C&C Generals:

All of them are now on GitHub:

To do this EA worked with Luke "CCHyper" Feenan, who they said was "part of our Community Council for the C&C Remastered Collection, and was involved in bringing the C&C Ultimate Collection to Steam back in March 2024". You can see the full message from EA and Feenan in a post on Steam.
Is that a good sign, neutral sign, or bad sign for people that wanted a Generals Remake with improved graphics?
Naah no need for unoptimized UE5 remake.
Just the old game updated to work great with modern systems and fps caps removed. Thats all we need.
I guess this really does add to the 'they lost the source code to Red Alert 2' rumor I've heard about. Unless surely it means they're working on a remaster, right? Right?!
I lean towards potentially remastered honestly.

I want the old classics to be suitable not only for old people with a feeling of nostalgia but also make them interesting again for new generations and a few more additional details in the interface and textures and a few more polygons on the model will go a long way to make this feel "current" again.
Nobody said it has to be unreal engine, nobody says it won't be optimized.
New engine technology brings support for modern hardware and new tricks.
It's not always bad to upgrade , rather the opposite.

Just look at most other EA remakes/remasters or any other big publisher ones. You can draw conclusions from there.
They always just f up. Downgrade compared to original.
Sure...miracles could happen, but i have doubts.
edit: Nightdive Studios can put out great remasters though.

Just an upgrade to a modern 3D engine with no changes to any other aspect of the game. Too much to hope for ... ?
I thought that is what CNC4 and Generals was?
It's funny when big massive studios face the guillotine, they switch from a anti-Consumer way of operating to a pro-consumer way. The bigger you get, the worse you are for the consumer it seems.
We have this happening with Rockstar now where they ditching PC releases because they want to sell games for 100USD, which include LOADS of mtx crap!
