ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN launches in May - will have Kernel Level Anti-Cheat

ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN is now set for launch on May 30th, and it does look great, but the anti-cheat could be a problem for Steam Deck / Linux players.

While the first ELDEN RING also has anti-cheat, specifically Easy Anti-Cheat (and does work), you can never be certain if a new game using it will actually work on Steam Deck / Linux with Proton unless the developer is clear on it. NIGHTREIGN clearly mentions on the Steam page it uses "Kernel Level Anti-Cheat" this time around too, which ELDEN RING does not (but that's a pretty new rule from Valve). Compared with the first game, NIGHTREIGN is also firmly focused on the online play which could make a big difference here.

We're tracking various games anti-cheat status on a dedicated page.

I've reached out via email to find out if the anti-cheat will be supported again like the first ELDEN RING.

I really hope this still works with Steam Deck. Elden Ring really was the launch title for the console, it would be a shame if we lost it due to cheating.

If you look at the Steam page for the DLC, it still lists EAC as the kernel level anti-cheat, which should mean it'll work on Linux/Steam Deck unless they change it to something else down the line.

It's not a DLC, it's a standalone game. Even with the same developer, one game working does not mean the next definitely will.

There's a chance this isn't kernel-level anti-cheat, since a lot of Steam Games with Easy Anti-Cheat say it's kernel-level level but isn't

why does a purely PvE game with no player-to-player economy need anti-cheat at all??

You're right, Liam. I thought it was a DLC since I'm too used to it when it comes to anything outside of the base game.

Leaderboard rankings and achievements are often the excuses used.

If it's an online focused game then forget about it working on Steam Deck, first because far less people play online games on the go, and second because kernel level anti-cheat normally means Windows only.
