Monster Sanctuary was good fun, so I'm real keen to see more from moi rai games. Their sticking to monster taming / capturing with Aethermancer and now you can try it out in a demo.

There's some interesting design choices here. Firstly with the capture system, where you capture the soul of a creature so you can rebirth it into your party. A fun difference to capturing specific monsters directly. The second is that when one of your creatures dies in battle, it's gone forever. That's not the end of it though, as this game is all about the cycle of death and rebirth. It's all about the rogue-lite hook here of meta progression, with creatures becoming stronger from previous lives.

What they said to expect from the demo:

  • Classic Roguelite experience but mixed with monster taming.
  • You are expected to fail! But collecting new Monsters and gaining experience will eventually make you succeed!
  • While this is a demo, you can spend a lot of time until you discover everything it contains.
  • 15 playable monsters with hundreds of skills
  • 2 Areas (and Champions to defeat!)
  • NPCs with a dynamic dialogue system that react to your choices
  • A lot of meta upgrades: soulbonding monsters (to be able to play with them on new runs) for example
  • Languages supported: English, German, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese
  • Controller support
  • An additional 'Heroic' difficulty challenge if you defeat the game on normal.

For this one they're not going with Team17 as publisher again. Instead, they're working with offbrand games.

As far as I know it will have Linux support at release, but the demo needs to be run via Proton. I've tested it working perfectly with the latest Proton 9.0-4 from Valve. This is definitely one you're going to want to try. Some really slick animations in the battles, with some really fun creature design too. The way you gain new creatures is also quite interesting, and definitely different to other games in the monster taming genre.

I have a feeling this is going to hook me badly at release, the demo was delicious. Check out the demo on Steam.
