Sadly the RoadCraft demo is currently broken on Steam Deck / Linux

At least on AMD systems like Steam Deck and my Desktop Linux install, it seems like the demo of RoadCraft from Saber Interactive / Focus Entertainment is quite broken. Shame, as this is one of the games I am currently most excited about from the team behind the popular SnowRunner.

On my Desktop Linux install (Kubuntu 24.10) tested across Proton 9 and Proton Experimental, it will completely lock up my system when trying to enter into a mission. This has been tested numerous times now and it just doesn't work. It could well be a RADV Mesa driver bug, I don't have an NVIDIA system to test.

The Steam Deck also has a similar problem, although it's more graceful where it will crash and quit back to the Steam Library.

I've posted a bug report with Valve including some logs, so hopefully a resolution can be found. For now, it appears this one is a no-go, but at least with the demo we've been able to catch the issue before the full launch which is due May 20th so it's not far off.

RoadCraft | Release Date: 20th May 2025

A complete shot in the dark: Does it maybe work with llvm instad of aco (RADV_DEBUG=llvm %command%)?
(No, I don't really expect this to work, but it might be worth a try.)

As someone who recently discovered Snowrunner and is totally addicted to it, I really hope they fix it before launch.

Just played it on Kubuntu 24.04 using Proton Experimental and an Nvidia RTX 4090. Game ran flawless

Yes it seems specific to AMD GPUs.

As for the other comment, RADV_DEBUG=llvm %command% does not help, it then crashes on the intro video.

I just about cleared my schedule for this one..... super bummed now. I guess i'll just flip my trucks over accidentally after 30 minutes of futzing with mud tires in Snowrunners then. ughh...

Snowrunner, Mudrunner, and Expeditions all out here with platinum ratings on protondb.

I was looking forward to this demo, really enjoyed Snowrunner and Expeditions (to a lesser extend, but still fun). I gave it a try last night on the deck and this morning before heading to work on the desktop, and yeah it straight up crashed after loading the level. I hope there is a fix before the demo is pulled from the store.

And as BigRob029 said, the previous games are rated Platinium on ProtonDB (and worked flawlessly on both desktop and the deck), so let's hope it's just a small mistake that can quickly be addressed by the devs or Valve (but let's home for the former, Valve shouldn't always be cleaning other's mess)

Works here, but performance is pretty bad.
2560x1440, high settings, DLSS quality, runs about 50-70 FPS only
Ryzen 5800X3D, RTX 3080
