Windowkill is a twin-stick shooter where the game window itself is constantly closing in on you. A really clever idea, and a game I had a lot of fun with previously and now it has improved Steam Deck support too.

In the 1 year anniversary update that's now available, the developer mentioned it's now Steam Deck Verified, with Valve giving it the rating on February 11th on the Native Linux version (made with Godot).

New feature highlight for update 4.0.5:

  • Added custom asset refresh button
    • This will reload custom asset files in the current tab, without needing to reload the game
  • Added "now playing" popup when shuffle is enabled
    • Includes a toggle option to disable
  • Added "drag aid windows by center" option
    • When enabled, this allows moving peer and drain without needing to click on the titlebar
  • Added new menu window to "friend"
    • This allows toggling visibility, changing colors, and quitting to the title
  • Added a new audio visualization background type, and example background "thump"
  • Added challenge run icon to the in-game UI
  • Added "UI text scale" option
  • Added new "steamdeck" window theme
  • Added Steam Deck-specific controller input icons
  • Added silly anniversary-only crown change

I was curious how this would actually look on Steam Deck. As when you think about it, this game was really designed for a desktop PC. The whole idea of having multiple windows like that is not something you would see with how you usually interact with the Steam Deck in Gaming Mode.

So I gave it a fresh spin today to see how it was done and actually — it's still just as brilliant on Steam Deck. The window mechanic with how it's implemented works really well here too, even with the smaller screen.

Worth picking up for sure, it's challenging but a lot of fun.
