Valve released a new Steam Deck Beta Client update for February 14th, showing the love to battery life with a little extra juice. You need to be on the Preview / Beta channel to receive the update for testing.

Here's what's changed:

General

  • Fixed an error on the Downloads page when a Free to Play game is removed during installation.

Steam Input

  • Reduced polling rate while the Steam Frame Limiter is active to save additional power. This can save up to 6% on battery life when running at 30fps in a low-power game like HL2.
  • Fixed an error on the virtual menu settings when bound to gyro.

Great to see the Steam Deck just keeps on improving so many things years after release. That's one of the benefits of the Steam Deck compared with other hardware, Valve just keep on pushing out those updates.

I'll take everything they give us in the battery department; my battery health stands at 70%, right now and it shows in my playtime.

Oooh, does SteamOS have a builtin battery health indicator or how did you get that value? Would be cool to know. :)

Exactly. The battery icon, in the task bar, will give you this info.

Edit: Right now, I'm in a full charge/ full drain (through bios) to see if I can get it to "reset" the battery health.

@Liam: Please give us back the quote button. Quoting text that's already there won't hurt a law.

So Steam Deck's BIOS has some battery maintenance options?

One thing I wish for longevity's sake: An option to toggle "only charge to xx% total" like ios does. It'd help the lifespan of the battery so much. I never have my phone charge past 90% because I want this battery to last for as many years as possible.

Yes. You must drain the battery while playing (let it shutdown while in game), connect the Steam Deck to the original charger (recommended), restart in Bios, disconnect from charger and let it completely drain. After that, the Steam Deck must be recharged for the next 6-8 hours. Rinse and repeat. Read that it could require more than one such cycle...

Let's hope so. Else I will have to think about a battery bank or a battery replacement (iFixIt or 185$USD if done by Valve, from what they told me).
