This is the beauty of open source in action - everyone can benefit. Valve are no stranger to open source, and as it turns out they're using a little bit of code from Godot Engine now too.

Spotted by a few eagle eyes in the recent big Source SDK update that gives the code for Team Fortress 2 for modders, the official Valve GitHub page actually notes that "Bicubic lightmap code lovingly taken and adapted from Godot" (with the Godot license also noted).

Bicubic lightmap support was first introduced in the Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update, and then rolled out yesterday for various Valve classics like Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source and others as part of all their big updates.

Just a fun little detail I thought you might like to know. Valve do a lot with open source, the most notable being their compatibility layer Proton to run Windows games on Linux / SteamOS / Steam Deck.

Minor update 20/02/25: adjusted the title from "pinch" to "use" to not give the wrong impression for all the people that don't read past a headline these days.
