A nice surprise! Control Ultimate Edition is set for a big update today to bring in a bunch of extra graphics features and tweaks along with some bug fixes. It currently works on Linux with Proton and is Steam Deck Verifed.

Here's all that's changed in update 1.30:

OUTFITS
The following outfits are now available to all players. The outfits can be accessed and equipped from the Control Point in the Central Executive Sector area.

• Astral Dive Suit (formerly a pre-order exclusive)
• Tactical Response Gear (formerly a pre-order exclusive)
• Urban Response Gear (formerly a pre-order exclusive)
• Extradimensional Suit (formerly obtainable in the AWE DLC by finishing SHÜM)

MISSIONS
All players will receive the mission Dr. Yoshimi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience, featuring voiceover by Hideo Kojima. The mission is playable when you pick up the Dr Tokui Tapes collectible in the Extrasensory Lab of the Research Sector. (This mission was previously exclusive to the PlayStation 4 Digital Deluxe version of Control.)

GRAPHICS
• Added HDR support
• Added new Ultra ray tracing preset, which gets you more rays per pixel and higher temporal stability
• Added ultrawide monitor support for up to 48:9 monitors
• Added an FOV scaling setting for the gameplay camera
• Updated SDR to 10bit (from 8bit), which reduces visible color banding
• Improved graphics adapter detection at startup, with automatic selection between DX11 and DX12
• Implemented screen aspect ratio fixes for ultrawide monitors
• Your current monitor resolution can now reliably be selected from the screen resolution and rendering resolution menus
• Added rendering resolution support beyond 4K
• Implemented texture streaming fixes
• Ray tracing bug fixes

DLSS SUPPORT
• Added DLSS support for arbitrary resolutions
• Added DLAA support
• Updated DLSS to DLSS 3.7, with higher temporal stability
• Film grain added back to DLSS SR
• Fixed shadow resolution when DLSS is enabled
• Added resolution dependent mip map bias for DLSS. This enhances texture quality, for example when applying the DLSS Performance setting.

GENERAL
• Updated the audio on cinematics and end credits to remove unintended channel mixing. You will no longer hear anything that isn’t intended to be heard. (It wasn’t the Hiss, it was us. Sorry.)
• Several bug and crash fixes

I really enjoyed playing through Control, it had me absolutely hooked when it arrived quite a few years ago now. If you haven't played it yet you're in for a good time. One of those where you just keep on pushing through, as you just really want to know more.

Is there any FSR support in Control? Not much use for DLSS, on my Steam Deck... Thinking about it, maybe with Decky-Framegen?

I wonder if this means that they'll finally fix the GOG version.

No unfortunately not, but you can specify a lower rendering resolution than the output so it basically works like FSR.
It's a shame that they still haven't added any.

I played it on my "normal" ultrawide (21:9 3440x1440) and it was totally fine, I guess this support is just for the extremes.

I thought the game was great up until a part (I think near the end) where I was in a section that had a REALLLLLY annoying puzzle that would constantly repeatedly instakill me and it was just trial and error trying to find out how not to die a million times in a row. I quit then. But had a blast up until that point.

As someone with a 32:9, this is pretty cool.

So, AMD didn't pay enough to get their open source solution implemented instead of proprietary Nvidia shit?

Dear Remedy, sincerly hope you're the next devolper getting pulverized by capitalism. You earned it!

Let's not forget, Control was an Epic Exclusive. Even more reason to dislike the studio.

As an AMD user, would be nice to have FSR support however the update is appreciated nonetheless.

Other companies such as Sony would call it a remaster and slap a price tag.

EDIT: Seems the update will be released at a later date on GOG.

Note that all this was previously available in an unofficial patch (but developed by a Remedy employee... therefore with source code access): https://www.nexusmods.com/control/mods/90

This is why the update doesn't add other upscalers, since the mod didn't have those either. FSR2 injection with external tools like OptiScaler is said to work on the mod's page still, so maybe it works with this update too.

As I understand it, this update is all about making it an official patch and unlocking previously exclusive content. This is still pretty nice to see nonetheless.

Good to see they care in keeping the game alive

But can it run crysis:9 aspect ratio at 4K?

The non-ultra edition will remain on the old engine?

FSR2 injection with external tools
The problem is you dont want to just upscale. My monitor can do this. You want to use a good supersampling algorithm for upscaling and anti-aliasing the picture in motion without artifacts or ghosting.
Both DLSS and FSR are really just usable since their 3er versions.
FSR2 is useless, the resulting picture is crap if you not upscale to resolutions above 4k.

FSR4, usable with the new RDNA4 Radeons, is a really great piece of software but needs to be implemented by developers. But reports indicate it is even usable by swapping dll files if the 3er Version is in the game.

I disagree. Yes, they made some shitty business decisions and it already started with Alan Wake as an Xbox exclusive. Then they decided to get Epic exklusive and even killed the retail version for Alan Wake 2.

But: Remedy is one of the last (or the last?) bigger studios which develops singleplayer games in new universes without producing sequel after sequel after sequel. The try stuff other studios are afraid of instead of trying to build a cashcow with a live service game and microtransactions.

Well the Remedy been an Epic Store Exclusive is « maybe » because Epic Game edit their game now ? So it’s a bit complicated when the editor own the platform.

For the Nvidia vs AMD, Control, as far as I remember, is the first game to integrate DLSS and Ray Tracing with huge Nvidia partnership, so I’m not surprised.

Remedy still make good game. Control is really good, Alan Wake 2 was a very nice surprised, for once a old-school studio for the 90´s keep doing good game. Asking for a studio to be dead because of the technology they use is pretty hard.

That's why I mentionned Decky-Framgen. With this plugin, you can swap DLSS 3 enabled games to AMD FSR 3. On top of that, you get Framegen (if you want to use it, but, personally, I don't). On Steam Deck, it means More FPS, less power draw, longer battery life.

@Strapinski
While that was true at the time, Remedy ended up making physical copies of Alan Wake 2 available for purchase on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
