For classic Counter-Strike fans, you may want to keep an eye out for the just announced CS:Legacy from the team behind CSPromod. This is not a mod but a full game due out sometime in Early Access in 2025.
As their developers explained:
CS:Legacy is a fully standalone remake of classic Counter-Strike 1.6, built from the ground up on Valve’s official Source Engine 2013 SDK, releasing on Steam Early Access in 2025.
We’ve carefully recreated every detail of the original gameplay, while introducing modern enhancements and major technical improvements—all without losing the classic CS feel that made it legendary.
What exactly makes this so special then? They highlighted these points about it:
- Full Remake, Not Just a Mod – Built from scratch with 100% custom code, 3D assets, levels, textures, characters, UI, weapons etc. We own the entirety of our work, which guarantees the game's future and unlimited potential.
- Authentic Gameplay – Every mechanic, movement, and weapon behavior is faithfully replicated from the classic game.
- Engine Enhancements – We improved Valve’s Source Engine with our custom renderer, Physically Based Rendering pipeline, completely rewritten surface reflection system, fully custom UI, custom in-house source engine tools and many more features.

It's not clear yet what platforms will be supported. Will be keeping an eye on it for more updates and announcements.
Is cooler.
They are also working on a reimplementation of Team Fortress 2 in its original state using the same open-source engine.
Is there still an audience for these games?
