Square Enix have updated FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH and they've managed to cut down the download size for the Steam Deck and by quite a bit too.
Version 1.003 was released today, March 6th with these notes:
- Improved overall game stability, including several bug fixes.
- Fixed an issue where the application sometimes crashes while playing the game on a PC using certain AMD Radeon products.
- Reduced the package size when downloading on Steam Deck.
Comparing a fresh download between my Steam Deck and Desktop Linux, the Steam Deck download for it is now 88.1GB whereas on Desktop it's showing as 144.2GB.
Developers can actually set up a special Steam Deck only content depot on Steam which they could use to put in smaller texture packs, smaller movies and so on (as just two basic examples). Not many developers actually do this.
Nice to see our favourite handheld get the update treatment from major studios, especially making it easier to actually get the game downloaded saving a whole lot of time and bandwidth for people.

wow, just wow!
this is finally being treated as an dedicated device.
i mean, we had other developers optimizing things , but not this type of optimization.
i bet they arent delivering 4k textures on a device that cant handle then anyway.
its a shame it still dont fit in the 64GB model, unlike any game relased on the switch that target the low end option, but sitll it can accept microSD card so its not the end of the world.
i hope this trend continue and that valve can sell a lot more before they relase the steam deck 2...
but first they need to put it in more regions and physical stores.
See more from me
