GOG have just announced another expansion of the the GOG Preservation Program. This is their promise to keep classics updated and working on modern systems. There's now 141 games in the program.
While their current aim is only to ensure the games keep working on modern Windows, it should also mean they're easier to run with Wine / Proton on Linux too since you'll be getting (hopefully) the best version of the game.
The full list of games that have joined along with their current discount in the GOG Spring Sale:
- Silent Hill 4: The Room (-35%)
- F.E.A.R. Platinum (-80%)
- Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (-50%)
- Tomb Raider: Underworld (-89%), Anniversary (-89%) and Legend (-86%)
- Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy 1+2+3 (-75%)
- Ultima 1+2+3 (-75%)
- Ultima 4+5+6 (-75%)
- Ultima 8 Gold Edition (-75%)
- Wing Commander 1+2 (-60%)
- Deus Ex GOTY Edition (-86%)
- Jagged Alliance 2 (-60%)
- Fallout 2 (-75%)
- Privateer 2: The Darkening (-75%)
- Port Royale 3 Gold (-70%)
- Alien Breed + Tower Assault (-80%)
- Cannon Fodder (-75%) and Cannon Fodder 2 (-75%)

Isn't GOG's main goal to preserve all games in their catalog (with compatibility for newer systems as time goes on) instead of just those very selective titles from their new preservation program? I'm not sure if I'm getting this right...

GOG is a store just like any other nowadays, with the added bonus of DRM free direct downloads. This is their specific promise to ensure select titles will be updated for modern PCs.

@Liam Dawe modern PC or modern windows version, the compatibility part of the program doesn't bring a lot for us Linux / wine user ( more a question that a statement ). It still a good idea from gog.

I'm sceptical that there is any benefit when the games are run through wine. I remember reading that they broke the installer of one of the Lego games with the recent preservation program update.

I do prefer gog over steam, it's just such a shame they don't seem to care about linux that much. Game preservation goes better with linux then windows
Also some games on gog don't seem to get game updates like their steam counter-part
Silent Hill 4 also adds in the missing content that was only in the ps2 version, so this preservation program should have at least some benefit for wine (including its improved controller support

Oh and one more pet peeve (last one I promise)
Some native linux games on gog (like pikuniki) the controller support doesn't work, I then have to add it as a non-steam game and enable steam input
At which point I'm sort of like.. why am I not just buying this on steam?!
