12 years after the successful Kickstarter, the supernatural horror adventure ASYLUM from Senscape has finally seen a release. Although the Native Linux version has unfortunately been delayed.

Writing on the Steam forum the developer said:

So, I know a few of you were waiting for a properly native Linux version. Regrettably, it won't be ready for launch because of an annoying issue: the game makes use of MP4 videos, a codec which Linux doesn't support by default, and the Unreal plugin we were using to handle this stopped working with the 4.27 version. Very annoying, because the game launched and performed flawlessly, except that many videos were missing 🫠

HOWEVER! We tested the game with Proton and it performs great. The "Proton Hotfix" version works just fine.

In a follow-up post the developer noted they also tried WebM:

We tried, and no. Unreal 4.27 has crappy WebM support, the videos stuttered all the time. Believe me, we tried lots of approaches, and the solution seems to be resurrecting an old VLC plugin that has been discontinued for years.

For now then, it should hopefully work if you use Proton. However, some players have replied to note the videos are not working for them even with Proton. So it might still need some improvements.

Nice to see it finally get launched though, that was a long wait. I'll be following along for any Linux updates on it.
