The EchoPatch to modernize F.E.A.R. adds in gamepad support

EchoPatch, a mod patch for the classic and awesome shooter F.E.A.R. has another new release out and this brings gamepad support. I wrote about this patch only recently because it's awesome.

The patch itself does work just fine with Proton on Linux, and now it should make it even better for players who prefer a gamepad and Steam Deck too. A great time for the game since it was recently added to the GOG Preservation Program.

I did all the F.E.A.R. Videogame the same day during Covid to see how it feel in 2020-2021 and. Damn it was sooooo good. I mean : the first episode.

And it make me also going back in time. When we got Far Cry, Fear, Half Life 2. The PC Gaming videogame was something. And then, you start F.E.A.R 2 and - even if the game is still good - you can easily point that moment when the game industry decide to work on console and port on PC.

FEAR is amazing. IA is good. The fact everything can be destructed. You have a real « matrix » moment everywhere. The wall can tell you the history of the battle. The IA talk. Can send you a grenade and even sent it back to you if they are close. Still today the best IA in a FPS.
FEAR 2 lost the IA. Also the possibility to jump (no kidding). HUD take half the screen. FOV is bad. And it was how videogame was during the PS360 moment.

Before that we had PC game and console game. And PC was ahead of the console time.
Then we had this PS360 time where the pc game goes a huge downgrade on everything until the PS4 generation start to provide the same service with a better game. Fear is the greatest exemple of this time.

Also I’m struggle to imagine playing the first FEAR with Gamepad support with the IA that smart. But maybe it’s just me.

And FEAR 3 is really the worst thing ever. Don’t even try it. I try it. It was bad. Really bad. Really really bad. Worst than what people told me about.

How do we collectively feel about the expansions of the first part?

Spoiler, click me
I don't remember the names, but I do know that one was okay and the other not.

I like the base game – F.E.A.R. – although there are too many concrete surfaces. What I hugely dislike is the combination of the weapon limit and the ammo limit. There are too many fun things that don't work due to ammo limitations. If you could collect ammo for guns that you don't have, it wouldn't be as annoying.

Also the font size: The text is too small.

I'll have to give this mod a try since I haven't played F.E.A.R in a long time and never was good with the KB+M when I bought a copy of it a long time ago.

EchoPatch has a HUD scaling option so you can make the HUD and various texts larger.

Eh, I already have a solid controller config setup for this game. Now, if they add aim assist, then I'll probably need to download this mod for the SD!
