11 bit studios are remaking the original Frostpunk in Unreal Engine 5 with Frostpunk 1886

11 bit studios have announced today that their popular city building survival strategy game Frostpunk from 2018 is getting a remake in Unreal Engine 5.

Why? Well, they no longer develop their own in-house game engine they called "Liquid Engine" and Frostpunk 2 also uses Unreal Engine 5. They said they've wanted to continue working on the original Frostpunk, but their old engine was showing a lot of limitations. So they're going back to the start with Frostpunk 1886.

They said it's not just a plain recreation though. It will have "improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer" and serve as a "great introduction to the world of Frostpunk for newcomers, but also a title that die-hard fans of the game would love to play on repeat". They also have plans to add in "tons of new content, new mechanics, new events, technologies, and buildings" and more. 11 bit studios are also finally looking to add in official mod support too.

It will release sometime in 2027. The current version is rated Steam Deck Playable by Valve, and works well on desktop Linux with Proton (Gold on ProtonDB).

Personally, I've still not had the chance to actually play it. I don't even have a copy of it. Am I really missing out on something here? Let me know what you think.

Well, the new version will certainly run like shit on the SD, as all UE5 titles do. Perhaps we'll have at least some news of SD2 by then, though.

I'd say that yeah u missing something, especially because the game is one of the few truly hard and unforgiving city-building game. Politics also are there, and even tho it's not something like disco elysium level, there will be some tough choices to be made (mostly down to "making the most humane choice will hinder your progress and lower your chances of survival). It's a very interesting concept all in all, but be prepared to have a tough time.

Has the state of gaming changed in the last 7ish years that Frostpunk really needs a remake? Were its graphics so cutting edge at the time, that they now resemble hot garbage? Is the gameplay, compared to modern standards, so outdated that it drives away new players? Are the developers so bereft of new ideas that, instead of working on a new game, spending time and effort moving a property that's not even a decade old to a new engine and re-releasing it is their best option?

Another useless remake. The game is not that old and not looking bad in the first place. Nostalgia bait is fine once in a while, but IMO it has gotten absurd how many remakes, remasters, spin-offs, sequels, prequels and adaptations the entertainment industry has put out in the last decade. It has become shovelware.

I would like to see new things. Well-made, while we're at it. Not another pointless we've-had-that-before-but-better that lacks creativity.
