While Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed was already rated Steam Deck Verified by Valve, it's nice to see developers still making improvements to it. The original game released back 2010 for the Wii, with this remake arriving in September 2024.

Seems it didn't sell as well as hoped by THQ Nordic, a subsidiary of Embracer Group. In Embracer's earning report from November 2024 they said "The most notable new release, Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, late in the quarter, was well received by players but initial digital sales were slower than expected". On Steam, it has less than a thousand user reviews but it does have a Very Positive rating.

As for the update the notes are:

  • Excluded user settings from Steam Cloud saves; meaning Steam Deck and PC use separate user settings from now on.
  • Fixed initial start up resolution setting on Steam Deck.

I'm quite thankful for that first one. Games should simply not be storing any video settings at all in Steam Cloud saves. It makes it a real nuisance switching between systems like PC, Steam Deck and other handhelds. So it's good to see the issue solved.

Looks like the Disney's copyright of the Mickey character is near the end. Given how Disney is not promoting their mascot as they used too, I imagine they are preparing to give up on him since other companies will be able to use it all they want.

The question remains, who will have the guts to be the first, since Disney may want to scare people to jump into the opportunity, and they have the money to drag other companies to court sitting any legal shenanigans.

Disney haven't done much of anything with Mickey Mouse as an actual animation character, like in TV or films, for ages and ages. I think frankly he's just not a character that modern audiences find interesting. But he's still huge at things like the amusement parks, Disneyland and whatnot. It's an odd split.

I've long been curious about these Mickey games, solely because they were directed by Warren Spector, of Deus Ex fame; and I saw an interview where he sounded very proud of them. The games don't seem to be im-sims in any way though.
