Some evil Witch has kidnapped the Queen's children. As the Royal Wizard, it's up to your to rescue them. The only problem is that the Queen is a bit brutal, and has cut you in half. You're a Wizard though, so apparently being cut in half is no big deal. Note: key provided by the developer.

The developer calls it a "multi-player game for a single player", which is an interesting way to put it. Giving you 100 levels to conquer quickly, while your brain gets melted by trying to control the two characters together and escape each level. It's a thorough challenge and one that's really quite entertaining to run and jump through.

"Could an average player learn to control two Super-Mario-like characters at the same time?" is the question that inspired Alva Majo to develop Ambidextro. The answer is apparently yes. Unless you're me that is, because I'm terrible at it. Seriously, it's a fun game but really does challenge your attention and reflexes. It made me throw my controller down a couple of times when I was so-damn-close. Gets you feeling weirdly determined though, when you've gone from repeated fails to a split-second away from completing a level, resulting in needing just one more run.

With that damn level timer it's not just a question of speed but true skill too. One tiny misstep by one character, and you'll be mashing that restart button so hard. The level design is truly devilish at times too.

Highlights:

  • A multi-player game for a single player.
  • Control one character with each hand.
  • Make your two-halves meet before the time runs out.
  • 100 levels to conquer.
  • Retro dark-fantasy atmosphere with a dungeon synth soundtrack.

About the developer: Majorariatto is a small Spanish-based indie studio made of mostly-solo developer Alva Majo, music composer Alejandro Maciá, and occasional collaborators; this time, pixel artist SunPixels. Majorariatto has been releasing and self-publising games since 2016 with Majotori. Their last title, Pineapple on pizza, was a short free game that went pretty viral, with almost a million downloads and hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam from over 20,000 user reviews.

Ambidextro has Native Linux support.
