Popular idle game Melvor Idle is getting a sequel with Melvor Idle 2 bringing some huge new features
Coming sometime soon to Early Access, Melvor Idle 2 has been announced by developer Games by Malcs. Building upon the success and popularity of the first game, but with some big new features to hook you in.
The developer said: "Melvor Idle 2 is a direct sequel to Melvor Idle, with almost every single area upgraded or enhanced in some way when compared to the original. We have taken everything we’ve learnt from Melvor Idle and cranked up the dial in hopes to create an experience that far surpasses the original. Melvor Idle 2 introduces brand new Skills, increases base game level caps, reworks existing Skills and completely updates the visual aesthetics to give a whole new look and feel."
Interestingly, this time they've completely changed how they make the game too. They've gone with the free and open source Godot Engine for it. They've said monetisation will be the same as the original, a standard price ($14.99 USD) with paid large expansions in future and plenty of free updates.
Some of what's new in the sequel:
- A Brand-New Look and Feel: Experience Melvor like never before with updated graphics, enhanced visuals, animations, audio, and a modernized user interface, all designed to make your adventure even more immersive and engaging.

More details on their plans in the announcement.

* Offline progression is capped to 24h. However, this can be fixed with a mod from a large library. Although, it appears the game isn't designed for that, I love this playing style that you don't needing to login every day.
* Runs some kind of chromium. Had some issues with wine at the beginning, but now works out of the box without issues. Still, pressing the back button the Mouse returns to the main menu, which is annoying. However, this only applies to the Epic variant. Sounds great that they now use Godot.
In general it provides a lot more mechanics than a typical number crunching idle game. In my opinion a good recommendation. Lets see how good the squeal actually gets when it releases. Although the graphics and features look nice, it appears very similar to the old game to justify a new purchase for existing owners.
I played Melvor Idle when it was in Early Access. It was a well constructed idle game and Malcs was very engaged with the users. The wiki for the game was also well constructed and hosted by the developer. Just before exiting Early Access, Brendan Malcolm (Malcs) announced that Jagex would be the publisher of the game.
In the early 2000's, Jagex was a decent company. Runescape was a very popular game with a large following. In early 2010s, in my opinion, the company started it's downward descent. Since that time Jagex has been passed around from one publisher to another like a courtesan; to use an antiquated term. Soon after the partnership was announced, Jagex produced a vodcast to spotlight Melvor Idle. I watched the event because I was very interested in playing the game. In my estimation, the entire event was corporate hype. Malcs was in attendance looking very dazed and uncomfortable. Malcs had promised his userbase that there would never be any micro-transactions in Melvor Idle. He kept his promise, but a DLC was announced at this corporate event. After seeing where this was all headed, I stopped playing Melvor Idle.
