Building on top of the latest Fedora 42 release, Bazzite 42 is out now for this increasingly popular SteamOS-like option to put on your handhelds, desktops and more.

The project continues to grow quite nicely too, and they've shared another snapshot of recent statistics that show Bazzite as having around 29.5K active users as of April. Which is up from the 26.3K they showed back in February.

As for what's new with Bazzite 42 there's of course all the enhancements from Fedora 42 along with Beta support for the MSI Claw handhelds, there's improved HDR for both GNOME and KDE too along with "various improvements throughout the project". Another nice adjustment is improved HTPC support (Home Theater PC) with a patch for Steam's audio output resetting so it should now stick to what you set.

Some future plans were also outlined:

Our team is working with the folks at Fyra Labs (Ultramarine Linux) on a new Live ISO experience that may come to Bazzite in the future and a new Flatpak store is on the way to replace the aging Discover/Software thanks to Glorious Eggroll. Additionally, Yafti is being replaced with a modern and better first-run installer as soon as possible, and we’ll continue to work on expanding to new handhelds. As always if you want to come join us everything here is built in GitHub. We’d love the additional support!

I'll surely be interested in something that's better than the Discover store.

I will give Discover the credit for being so slow and bad it made me learn how to use the package manager through commandline instead, but a proper GUI app store would be a welcome addition even if I prefer the commandline now.

I'm using actually the gnome variant. Their installer still has issues on nvidia at least, but once it's running it's really good. It's actually the first immutable system I feel good with.

And I like that they just update in the background and I do not have to take care of the system. Clicking an update button once felt good, now it's just annoying.

I even was surprised how easy it was to set up a go and rust dev environment on a immutable system. So I'm quite content to continue using Bazzite (or something similar) in future.
