Bethesda Softworks today officially revealed and launched The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, after days of leaks. And from what they've revealed, I'm very excited to give it a go. It's even Steam Deck Verified right from the get-go with Valve verifying it against the latest Proton 9.0-4.
Bethesda teamed up with Virtuos for the remaster using Unreal Engine 5. Check out the trailer below:

The Complete Story

As a huge fan of Skyrim, completing it numerous times, I never was able to get into Oblivion (although it's been a long time since last trying it). Looks like this will be a great time to give it a proper go in completed upgraded form and it does look gorgeous. This doesn't just look like a remaster, it's practically a full remake based on everything they talked about during the livestream announcement.
There's a standard edition for £49.99 and a Deluxe Edition for £59.99. The Deluxe Edition includes:
- Digital base game
- Unique digital Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon Armors, Weapons, and Horse Armor Sets
- Digital Artbook and Soundtrack App
- Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions
- Additional downloadable content: Fighter’s Stronghold expansion, Spell Tome Treasures, Vile Lair, Mehrune’s Razor, The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, Orrery, and Horse Pack Armor
edit:
holy shitballs 115gb

also holy shitballs: the price. If you want the full story $60 is damn insane to ask for a remaster I feel like.

I find it weird that Elder Scrolls 6 is still not out and they are now doing remasters of 4...
I am strangely not excited about this. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Let's copy the best stuff modders made for free in the past 20 years and sell it 60 bucks ! Yay !
I recently read that Sir Terry Pratchett contributed to the companion mod Vilja, and that this mod helped him enjoy the game despite his illness (Vilja can lead the way out of dungeons, for instance). This got me curious.
If the remaster would support the original mods, it would be an insta-buy. However, unless there is an official statement that this is the case, I strongly doubt it.

I really like the way it looks, just picked it up now, hopefully it will have a vibrant modding community.Do we even know if it will be possible to mod in Oblivion Remastered? Are we just assuming it will be because other Bethesda games do?
Do we even know if it will be possible to mod in Oblivion Remastered?I have meanwhile also found a source that explicitly states that the remaster does not have modding support: https://help.bethesda.net/#en/answer/69672
the original was made with their own creation engine and this remaster is made in unreal engineYeah, see above. Modding is not supported in Oblivion Remaster.
However, heise (a German computer magazine publisher) wrote that supposedly the Creation Engine is still used under the hood of the remaster - if that is true, it might (warning: my own speculation) mean that the gameplay scripting is still done with Creation Engine, while Unreal is used for visuals.

I don't get it. Why didn't they use the Creation Engine from Skyrim SE or even their Creation Engine 2 from Starfield?
Don't get me wrong. From the launch videos, animated GIFs and pictures, the remaster looks gorgeous. It won't run in my gaming laptop, however. 125GB of storage? Sorry, Todd. I didn't upgrade for Starfield and I'm not upgrading for this one either. Those days are done.
I'll happily do another playthrough of my slightly modded version of the original Oblivion one more time ...

I never looked at the Starfield version, but CK is extremely outdated. I suppose they finally wanted to get rid of the old tech instead of continuing apply bandaids to CK.

Skyblivion will definitely run a lot better for most people!

I'd say they used UE5 for this because the core bethesda team didn't do it. They subcontracted it out and the subcontractors were probably most familiar with UE 4/5. Also, even though they SAY modding isn't supported, since it's a ue game, there will be mods, they just might have to hack them in.

The game could stand to be a bit more optimised, but I'm very pleased with it overall. GPU usage on my 7900XTX is around 85% with Mesa 25.0.3.
