Bethesda Softworks today officially revealed and launched The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, after days of leaks. And from what they've revealed, I'm very excited to give it a go. It's even Steam Deck Verified right from the get-go with Valve verifying it against the latest Proton 9.0-4.
Bethesda teamed up with Virtuos for the remaster using Unreal Engine 5. Check out the trailer below:

As a huge fan of Skyrim, completing it numerous times, I never was able to get into Oblivion (although it's been a long time since last trying it). Looks like this will be a great time to give it a proper go in completed upgraded form and it does look gorgeous. This doesn't just look like a remaster, it's practically a full remake based on everything they talked about during the livestream announcement.
There's a standard edition for £49.99 and a Deluxe Edition for £59.99. The Deluxe Edition includes:
- Digital base game
- Unique digital Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon Armors, Weapons, and Horse Armor Sets
- Digital Artbook and Soundtrack App
- Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions
- Additional downloadable content: Fighter’s Stronghold expansion, Spell Tome Treasures, Vile Lair, Mehrune’s Razor, The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, Orrery, and Horse Pack Armor
On a side note: I really feel sorry for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developers. It seemed like a good game that will most likely be overshadowed by OR on release tomorrow...
Any version of Skyrim beyond the one bundling all DLC's was a cash grab, meanwhile they never really monetized NOR modernized the unsung hero, the third best Elder Scrolls game (fite me)
The best (Morrowind) does not really need a remaster, or at least it does not need a remix, modern sensibilities would just destroy the soul of the game
And the second best (daggerfall) is being reimagined by the original people anyway, as wayward realms.
From what little I've played, it's... really good. It somehow polishes a lot but still is the grand old jankfest Oblivion was.
All the others were titles that I loved for the first dozen of hours or so but the longer I played the more fed up with them I felt. I really can no longer remember what all of my gripes were (it's been too long) but I did feel disappointed with character progression, magic-system, side quests, quest rewards, npc:s, repetitive gameplay/quests etc. etc.
There's that beautiful reveal moment when you exit the sewers, then a shine of excitement as you uncover the gameplay mechanics. Then the gates start opening and the entire gameplay loop goes on repeat.
You could argue that Skyrim swapped gates for dragons. And that's kind of true. But fighting a dragon is quick and exciting. Meanwhile, slogging through YAOG (yet another oblivion gate) became tedious after the first or second. There's like 25 of these things, isn't there? Maybe it just felt like there was 25 of them.
Also UE5. Also, the price, goddam. Also, no noods.
Nobody does it better. There is a mountain worth of valid complaints that can be levied towards Bethesda, but they're the masters of the open world feel.
I'm getting 60fps no problem apart from at a handful of momentsIn the original game, the telling point was the great battle with the Oblivion forces at Bruma. The game would just slow to a crawl. I wonder if the remaster will fair better at that point in the game?
Never was really hooked into Oblivion, but still bought remaster in hopes it will motivate Bethesda to remaster their other games. Like Morrowind.IMO, the game mechanics of either Morrowind or Daggerfall are just too complex for Todd's current aRPG approach to Elder Scrolls games. If they were to make either of those excellent cRPG's into aRPG's, fans would be in an absolute uproar. Besides, OpenMW and the modders have greatly modernized the look and feel of Morrowind. Daggerfall Unity is looking pretty good too.
So no, I don't think we'll ever see remakes of these earlier games. I imagine that Oblivion Remastered is just to hold over the fans until TES6 releases.
And I'll probably get downvoted for saying this (oh wait, this isn't Reddit), but I always felt Oblivion was a superior game to Skyrim (better spell system and spell crafting, better quests, beter atmosphere, better UI etc (except leveling, which is admitted better in Skyrim, but thankfully this is no longer an issue now)), so I for one am super excited to see this remaster. I've also never fully clocked Oblivion, so I'm really looking forward to my first vanilla playthru, with no mods to distract me. Also happy to report that it's been running flawlessly on my GPD Win Mini 2024, running CachyOS.
