Just some info for you.

Multiplay said our server spikes up to 6GB RAM use, which isn't right. They are testing a fresh world on it at the moment (old one is backed up!).

I managed to get it up to 1.2GB RAM by just myself doing hardly anything on it, they claim this is normal, but if you factor in a few more players it will just spike again.

I am currently considering moving hosts for it, pretty annoyed as I paid a bit upfront for it.

Details for our server can be found in this article.

New reply:
QuoteEach user will not increase the usage by such a large amount, After connecting to the server the usage increased by 100-200MB.

Unfortunately it appears your previous world was having some issues, when a player was loading a certain area it was using a huge amount of memory (more than it ever should! Normally a corrupt world) This caused the server to restart, the new world does not have any corruption and loads correctly and works smoothly :)

I understand your frustration, but we cannot edit the world to improve performance and the only resolution is to use the newly generated world. The issue with the previous world is outside of our control :(

So in other words, we are shit out of luck with the old world.

Thanks for being on top of this, Liam. I hope the planets can be saved if we need to start fresh - they are all individual files, and the universe is an extra file. Not sure what "world corruption" would mean, but I assume it's the universe.dat, not the planets. Also, I kind of think the hoster is taking the easiest route: "World's broken, not on us, sorry!". How can they be so sure?
A new world has way less planets it needs to juggle, I'm sure world corruption is not the only difference between a new world and one that has been played in for a good week by various players.

Transferring planets is easy once you get your head around it. I did it during the beta and will gladly help.

I've put the original world back up, and set the server to auto-restart every 12 hours to help refresh the RAM.

I am hoping this + future Starbound updates might help.

RAM use shot back up to 3GB, so I have set the server to restart every 4 hours. Small price to pay if it means we can keep the worlds we currently have without any issues for now.

RAM use on our server still exceeding 5GB, going to have to start a new world.

Please backup anything you can from your current worlds as I will do a reset in a couple days.

Sadly it seems something has corrupted our world.

Buga happen though.

Hmm.. how much ram does the server actually have?

You are aware you can easily get dedicated servers with 64GB to 128GB RAM for under £100 month? Heck you can get 32GB for around £50 a month!

(Unmanaged of course, so you'd have to install/configure etc on your own but being Linux users that's no issue for us!)

I cannot afford to pay that amount on top of existing GOL expenses and my own personal bills.

We use Multiplay, a well known and official Starbound server provider.

Hey Liam, what a bummer, but thank you very much for dealing with this. My friend and I have grabbed our stuff from the server and are ready for the wipe.
I'm very curious to see wether the new world won't end up with the same "corruption"... still hoping for a word from the devs on the server issues, but alas, nothing yet.

The reset will happen tomorrow as tonight was too busy for me.

Reset completed.
