I just bought a 1050 ti evga superclocked edition. I replaced it from a 750 ti evga superclocked edition. The Unigine Heaven benchmarks look good, gaining a 13 fps average (29.3, 7.1, 62.6 to 42.4, 7.8, 95.7 avg/min/max ultra settings extreme tessalation no AA). However, when I went to benchmark Shadow of Mordor, I saw no significant improvment (32, 15, 62 to 34, 17, 69 medium preset). When I play, it hovers at around 30 with frequent drops to 25 and below. Am I missing a launch option or do I have to change something in the driver settings? I already have __GL_ShaderPortabilityWarnings=0 %command% in my launch options. I am currently running the latest 375.20 drivers.
My rig consists of a fx 8120 at stock, 16gb 1333mhz ram and 2 1080p monitors and linux mint 18

you could try __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 %command% , it sometimes helps but i think feral games already do that by def.

I can't because my case has very bad airflow. When I play the temp goes up to around 70C for the cpu at stock according to psensor.

I have come across a number of computers where the CPU was inadequately cooled, and it gets to high temperature, and then the CPU speed throttles down to contend with the excess heat.
Something like a Coolermaster Hyper TX3 EVO (usually costing less than £20 online) which can be used with AMD or Intel CPUs:

If you decide to upgrade your PC case, I'd recommend a recent purchase of mine: Aerocool VS-1

Not only is this case incredibly cheap but it is better built than many budget models, and has space to fit a full-size GTX1080 graphics.

As you have suggested, I have traded in my 8120 for an 8320 and a better case (Fractal R4) I also bought a corsair h110i watercooler. I will show the benchmarks of it at stock and OC. This is the Shadow of Mordor Benchmark 1080p Medium settings No tesselation and no AA
8120 stock 34, 17, 69
8320 stock 38, 18, 80
8320 3.6 GHz (100 MHz OC) 39, 19, 79
8320 3.8 GHz (300 MHz OC) 39, 20, 76
8320 4.0 GHz (500 MHz OC) 41, 21, 81
I am afraid of turning it up any further because my mobo (M5A97 LE R2.0) is not suited for extreme overclocking. Not a stellar improvement either, but I will probably upgrade to zen or kaby lake once it comes out.

To compare my results to yours I got the following at medium preset with tessellation on and FXAA:
Min: 24.26
AVG: 46.47
Max: 83.28
I have an FX-9590 @ 4.7 GHz, a GTX 680 2GB, 16GB of DDR3-2133 RAM, Linux Mint 17.3, kernel 4.4.0-51 and am using the 367.57 drivers. I'd have to agree with the others that your CPU is holding you back although getting faster RAM could help as well.

Overclocking your CPU will increase your fps if the CPU is a bottleneck but most of the times not that much.
The FX-8120 doesnt perform well on single threaded applications/games and the problem is that most of the Games are coded to take advantage of 1 core and some maybe 3-4 max. In short I think your CPU is a bit of bottleneck.
The FX-8350, is the recommended CPU for Shadow of Mordor but I will give you some other tips to check out
2) Memory = 16GB (I hope are 2x Modules and not a single Module)
------------------------------------------------------------
When you have a second memory module, make sure that the dual-channel mode is enabled and that will double the memory bandwidth. GPU performance is highly dependent on memory bandwidth and your frame rates will increase.
3) Motherboard
--------------
I dont know what motherboard you have but make sure you are using a pci express x16,
Some motherboards have pci express slots that in bios you can set it up as gen2 or gen3.
(in a descent motherboard the above options in tests didnt make much of a difference but some users reported that their benchmarks went up, some other said that setting their pci express from gen3 to gen2 had better performance)
All components play a significant role in performance..
