Would SteamOS make any sense with an older AMD GPU?
mono68 Dec 9, 2016
I bought quite a cheap computer with Intel Xeon E3-1225V3 Processor. I would like to put my old AMD Radeon HD 7870 inside and use it as a secondary gaming PC.

I'm far from being a Linux expert at all but I like to try things out and have Ubuntu as a secondary OS on my primary desktop computer.

Now I would like to give SteamOS a try on my "new" secondary computer. According to the system requirements for AMD GPU's it has to be at least the 8500er series. So am I out with my 7870 anyway?

And if it works will the performance be good or bad?

I think the supposed minimum requirement is actually an ancient Radeon 8500, not the more recent Radeon HD 8500 series. So basically anything that's well supported by AMD's drivers. You should be good, unless you expect stellar performance.

Thank you. I tried SteamOS but then I decided to rather use a full featured distro so I re-visited some Ubuntu flavors just to find my self in the end with Manjaro Linux and I like it quite much so far. Steam was pre-installed and worked out of the box. I can not say this about Ubuntu.
