Native vs Steam/Proton
Salvasian Jan 9, 2019
Hi I am a new user so apologies if I have asked this question in the wrong area or if it has been asked before (though I couldn't find anything in search).

I am looking at trying switching from Windows to Linux (specifically Ubuntu) for gaming. I tried this several years ago but ended up switching back to Windows 10 due to encountering some difficulties playing with friends. Specifically the game that I had trouble with was Total War Warhammer (either number 1 or number 2, sorry I can't remember which). TWW had a native Linux version which made it very easy to install / launch / play. The only issue was that that Linux version was not able to join games hosted by the Windows version of the game.

Since that time Steam/Proton has become available which I understand lets you play the Windows version of games on Linux, so what I was hoping that someone might know is whether it is possible to use Steam/Proton to play the Windows version of a Steam game if there is also a native Linux version of the game (i.e. can you choose which version Steam downloads)?

Hello and welcome.

The ability to download a game using Proton/SteamPlay isn't available in the client, but as always with the Linux community someone made a tool to do it for you: https://github.com/Holston5/Native2Proton
