I am beyond amazed that there's still life in this project.

Well with what, 20-30 million USD from backers, I think there's a high expectation that something will come out of it... eventually...

30 million? lol.

I am beyond amazed that there's still life in this project.
Why?
Because it's still not a released, complete game. Those Battlefield games you talk about are not just alpha builds, are they?

I'm amazed that they STILL after THIS many years are working on a game that's not even released yet. You are aware that this game were first announced TEN years ago, right? And that the first backers STILL have nothing complete to play? It's amazing that people have this kind of patience.

all the kids seem to want every fast fast fast.

I'd say the concept of this game should be any sci-fi geek's dream, young and old. I think No Man's Sky has proved that it's not all about fast fast fast.

Well with what, 20-30 million USD from backers, I think there's a high expectation that something will come out of it... eventually...

... With eventually being the key word here. :D

Yeah, I was surprised too. It's supposedly the highest budget crowdfunded project to ever exist.

That was not even half of the initial campaign. And with CIG having over 700 employees, I imagine that doesn't even cover for half a year of operation. Looks like they actually passed 400 million today.

"Star Citizen is still breaking crowdfunding records, having now raised over $350 million following one of its most successful years so far."

So is the game working OK with the latest updates? I haven't really played it in a long time. I should probably set up a new prefix for it. Is anything needed there besides DXVK?

Works "fine" (SC alpha disclaimers still apply obviously) and the addition of EAC hasn't changed that. Lutris installer is still valid. Do take note of the sysctl in the description, you won't even reach the menu without it.

Edit: for those interesting in mucking about a bit for free, it's free to play until Wednesday 1 dec.

Not sure what you mean by the description. Is this about vm.max_map_count?

Yes, that's the one.

Ok, I'll admit I was wrong. 30 million was a tad low. To be fair, I'll admit a backed it Originally and remember them announcing something to that tune.

Wait....they made 16 million in a month last year?!?!
Shmerl 21 Nov 2021
OK, this got me curious to try it again. Setting up the prefix :)

With regular Wine, the launcher looks like a white box. It works with Wine-staging though!
Shmerl 22 Nov 2021
Well, the game is crashing almost instantly after the launcher tires to start it. I don't see anything meaningful in the wine log either. Using Wine staging + dxvk, nothing else unusual enabled (I did set that /proc/sys/vm/max_map_count to 655300 though).

I use the wine version that the Lutris installer specifies (lutris-ge-6.16-1-x86_64). Learned the hard way that specific version were chosen for a reason. Also, your max_map_count is very low. Should be 16777216.
Shmerl 22 Nov 2021
Wow, that's a huge number :) 655300 used to work in the past. I guess they are adding huge amount of objects in the game. I'll give it a try. And will check if some other Wine versions help.

Is it one of these? https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine-ge-custom/releases

Probably built from that. But if you really don't want to use Lutris, you'll have some stuff to figure out. May the helper script can assist. The script at least provides some repos for alternate wine builds suitable for SC.

I'm not using Lutris directly, but I can try using their Wine builds if they are available somewhere. Don't they provide custom pre-built Wine versions?
