As for failures to build the kernel - hard to say what's wrong, without you posting the errors. If you are interested in the method I'm using to build it on Debian, let met know, I can post some steps here.

Good to hear that it worked out for you! Also, in Debian testing I still set up firmware manually, since firmware-amd-graphics package didn't catch up to Navi yet.

Beware of few hangs though. For example, to stabilize Firefox, you should for now run it with:

AMD_DEBUG=nodma
