I have 2 titles in mind:

1. Cube 2: Sauerbraten (http://sauerbraten.org/) which has recently new version (2020). Full FOSS.
I play a little and it's I think what @starfarer looking for.

2. Warfork (https://store.steampowered.com/app/671610/Warfork/) fork of old Warsaw. F2P and still in development. Requires steam to play.

Both titles have low playerbase but still have some.

Yeah, I agree, CS:GO doesn’t work for me either, especially after the Danger Zone update. But I don’t think that it’s the core problem, the game is just old and I got tired of it so that I decided to sell CS:GO skins for cash and remove it completely.

Now I think Apex Legends is the best fast-paced multiplayer shooter.

There's also Verdun/Tannenberg. Altough they're WWI themed they're reasonably "fast-paced". With the bonus of being Linux native.
